So I've finally pulled my old pc out of the cupboard where it's been since 2015ish....is there anything I should think about doing before getting it going again? I've order an SSD to throw it in and will try windows ten to bring it back with a speed boost but I'm thinking maybe the CPU with need cleaning and new thermal compound needed?
It's an am3 x4 phenom (995?), Clocked to near enough 4ghz with an 8800gt

Just fire it up. 4 years doing nothing is no bother for a PC as long as it hasn't gotten damp. New thermal paste wont hurt but is far from a requirement.
Hasn't gotten damp at all...maybe a bit more dust than I remember though :D
Fired up fine, incredibly slow though so looking forward to the SSD arriving! Used speed fan to check the temps and it seems to be running hotter than I remember (but then airflow isn't so great where I have it now) so may well look to reseat cooler in the near future.
