Hey guys,

Currently running a Super Flower Leadex Titanium 1600w power supply that I purchased many many years ago and has lasted through 3 full system upgrades (System currently a 7800x3d and rtx3090)

The power supply has been rock solid and still continues to do so but with these new power connectors for GPUs am now wondering if I have to change it just because the connectors are different? I'm looking to get either a 5080 or 5090.

Will I be able to use this power supply on these cards some how or am I being forced to replace a perfectly working power supply because of connectors?

Cheers :)

Not sure this helps, but I've been running my 4090 since launch via an adapter cable on a Corsair AX1200i with zero issues. The PSU itself is around 4 years old from an RMA.

I'm undecided about changing it for the 5000 series launch. Seems like the 5090 could draw about 125w extra over the 4090, but even so - I never saw my total wattage climb above 750w whilst gaming.

Oh ok so am i to assume i can just purchase an adapter cable to use on the new cards? im ok with that but a quick look seems to suggest Super flower adaptors are no longer available.. loads available for Corsair PSUs though.

Ill have a look but i might just buy a new PSU

Cheers mate

You don't need an adapter as Nvidia GPUs come with an adapter cable so they will work with older PSU.

That superflower PSU is a quality unit.

Apparently CableMod E-series cables fit Super Flower PSU's if you want a cable that plugs directly into your PSU. (please double or even triple check this though)

Or just get a different 3rd party adaptor as the Nvidia one looks nasty.

Technically that PSU would power multiple RTX5000 cards. The issue is the god awful 12vHP connectors Nvidia use. I believe Nvidia have 5 or 6 versions and revisions and all are prone to failure.

It is actually something to worry about. Nvidia blame the user when it all goes up in smoke, and that little connector can see maybe 45-50 amps, which IMO is bonkers. At this point Nvidia should colour identify the different revisions of connectors and plugs, or many just give us screw terminals/have electricians install the cards.

Cheers guys,

Thank for all the info, Ill look into the adaptors as I would rather continue using my super flower being such a solid unit that is more than cable to handle even a 5090 power requirements. Just worried I get the wrong adaptor and short something lol

What ever I chose I'm not pre-ordering the new GPUs as ill be waiting till people actually get them first, so plenty of time to think about it. good to know that I could possible still use my current PSU though .

Thanks

Small update, After watching a Linus tech tip video and then spotted on overlockers website itself for to Zotac cards, I can now see that some of the 5090s (if not all of them) will come with a 4-in-1 power adaptor anyways so that pretty much answers that :) Don't have to replace a perfectly working PSU

They all came with an adapter for the 4000 series (it might have been a mandatory rule from nvidia themselves), but looks like they will for this gen too.

As mentioned above, you can get cables that fit directly into your PSU's modular panel rather than using/extending PCIE 8-pins, which is less messy and awkward to use.

I would prefer to connect directly as that would be less messy but i'm just worried about compatibility, I assume you can't just use any old direct to modular panel adaptor as the ones I've seen seem to be for particular models and i can't find one designed for mine?

Ill keep checking but at least I have a full back plan if getting a direct adaptor doesn't work out... at worst i'd rather have a little cable mess and save a couple hundred quid lol

For a fairly long time, superflower used the same PSU side plug pinout for all their units. So I am fairly sure a good quality cable will exist for yours
