Hi Guys, I am planning on getting this (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BB-008-AE&groupid=701&catid=1428&subcat=1429) fan controller for my new desktop (i5 4670 with a K2 Mount Doom cooler) and was wondering what the pros/cons of using the fan controller to control the speed of the CPU fan.

I assume the CPU fan will speed up/slow down based on the CPU temperature? If so, will using the fan controller cause issues if the CPU heats up but the fan isn't going fast enough (because the fan controller will control the speed of it).

I apologize if this is a super n00b question, but I've used gaming laptops for the past 8 years so I am a bit rusty on desktops!

Thanks,

Blazin

Why not just have the motherboard use its PWM controller to keep control of the CPU fan. Once configured you just leave it do its thing and get on with your life. A fan controller will not be able to sense the CPU die temperature as well as the sensor on the CPU itself.

What Tealc said.
Use the PWM fan control on motherboard. It really does work. ;)
All fans in my system but GPU are controlled by motherboard CPU PWM signal. Everything idles at 24-28c@700rpm and full load is 42-48c@950-1000rpm. I could have lower temps or lower fan speeds if I wanted but it plenty cool and plenty quiet as it is now.

Edit: Cooler fans are capable of 2500rpm but built-in fan PWM control is set so CPU would need to be 65c before they would reach 2500rpm.. which will never happen.. unless I unplug the fans completely for about 20 minutes under full load.. than it will reach 72c.. but as soon as fans are plugged back in it starts dropping and in less than 2 minutes is below 50c again.. and that's with system still running at full load. :D

I've got all my fans on a fan controller except the CPU fan. My PC is fairly quiet even with the CPU being auto controlled, you'll be surprised that most of the time it should be fairly quiet.

Okay thanks for the advice guys. I think I'll give the fan controller a miss for now and use that money to buy a few extra case fans :)

Thanks
