Using Flash in Opera

This is irksome.

Throughout having different versions of Opera and Flash installed I have been unable to watch videos properly. This is because a little pause or hang occurs to the video (not sound) while playing. This occurs on iPlayer, BBC Sports' website, youtube - anything.

I try loading up the video's page in I.E. and the hang goes away.

The version of Opera is usually the latest, and so is Flash's. Restarting the browser, reinstalling both, using Opera's "identify as.." and "masquerade as..." functions don't seem to solve the problem. I'm having this issue across two machines. Does anybody know what is causing it?

I don't seem to have exactly the same issue - youtube etc seem fine but with the latest versions of Opera I've started having trouble with myspace. Pages fail to load completely and the 'loading' cursor grinds away interminably and the myspace player is unresponsive......

Hi Greenlizard0. Are you saying that you can't play videos at all on Opera? Or that it is just more work to get the videos working? On 9.64 iPlayer, BBC Sports and YouTube were OK. I take it you're on the latest 9.64?

Just upgraded to the latest 10.00 beta build of Opera today and watched some stuff on iPlayer without problems so I can't work out what problems you've got. :(

Have you tried the new versions of Flash released today? Long shot maybe but it could help. :)

'Allo mate.

Ok, the version of Flash isn't today's one - it's the previous so that is worth trying. I'm on 9.64.

It's not a case of more working will get the video's to work - they've worked the same way right from when I've tried viewing video's in Opera; the sounds fine, the video has little stutters/pauses every 10 seconds or so.

It's perplexing since it happens on both my laptop and my main rig, so it sort of has to be a software problem in either or both running together. :(

Hiya. :)

Opera is a cracking browser but is let down by some weird problems. :(

I sometimes get something similar to you, I always thought it was my ISP being congested or something. I find the best thing to do was to just refresh the video page once or twice. Perhaps try clearing the cache to flush out stuff?

Coee hi there!

I agree with that - when it works it's fantastic. I've been thinking for a while now that speed was what kept me with it. But it's become more and more problematic, and with Chrome and Iron being much faster I'm getting tempted to give them both a much longer run.

The version of Flash you use in Chrome/Iron/Firefox is the same one you use in Opera. The one IE uses is different entirely.

That's true - but one of the bigger reasons that I went with Opera was because it used to be the fastest. Now that Chrome/Iron are around I may as well try them if I have to still use a crap version of flash lol.

I have the same thing when I'm watching youtube vids then click the HD button in the bottom right. Video stops/goes black yet the sound continues. I have to refresh the page and try again until it works properly.

Going to bump this again.

I've just reinstalled my browser, and used Flash's own uninstall tool and reinstalled both versions of flash in Opera and I.E. Still the same problem, video stuttering on Opera and perfectly smooth playback in I.E.

Still? :(

What version of Opera and Flash are you running? Just for the record. :)

I assume Firefox and Chrome are playing Flash OK?

What AV have you got? I can't see how this would happen but I wonder if your AV is interfering with the Opera files somehow.

Opera is version 10.10 build 1893
Flash for Opera is version 10.0.42.34
Flash for I.E. 7 is version 10.0.42.34
Flash uninstaller used is version 4.0.0.20
Av is Kaspersky version 2010 (9.0.0.736)*

*This is the latest build, though this problem as said has been with all versions of Kaspersky, Flash and Opera I have used.

I have just tested it with Chrome (installing after Flash even!), and it runs fine. I can test on FF as well but I don't think I have to. :(

Edit - must be said. Chrome's pretty fast.

Have you tried another AV such as the trial version of NOD32? Just to eliminate Kaspersky.

I'm really stumped by your problems. I've not had anything similar and I can't for the life of me understand what's causing this for you.

It's really bizarre. There's a "Pause Protection" function on Kaspersky and while testing I used it just to eliminate it as a cause. The stuttering still occured when it was off.

You could try a safe boot of your PC with Kaspersky not running at all with no processes able to affect Flash whatsoever rather than pausing the protection but still have Kaspersky running. This is one of those problems where nothing obvious seems to work and you end up clutching at straws.

The most extreme straw clutching you could do would be to wipe the disk and reinstall Windows then install only Flash and Opera, no other programs including antivirus and see how Flash works on a vanilla install of Windows and just Opera installed. It is a very extreme measure and I'm not suggesting you should do it just that its a way to be sure that no other programs are doing something dastardly.

The installation I have now is different to the one in August but the same problem occurs.

It's bizarre, but I suppose it's not as inconvenient as it used to be. I now watch Sky on the PC and that uses Silverlight so I'm used to have two tabs in I.E. permanently open (along with Opera). Just wondering if there was any reported problems. :)
