Using IDE drives over SATA

I'm planning to build a new rig early next year. I probably don't need this question answered until then, but i'd rather know now. I have a 200GB SATA drive at the moment on an A8V Deluxe board, and I hate it. Having drivers for a hard drive is just silly. I want to try out the new vista build but cant, since I need the drivers. I don't have a floppy drive either so any drivers need to be slipstreamed into an OS. Apart form the recovery CD I have here, I have not been able to get a slipstreamed copy of XP Pro working (with nLite). I really do want to use a couple of huge IDE drives over SATA on my next build to save me the stupid fuss of SATA drivers. The question is, will this result in a noticable performance loss? I'm a gamer, not especially heavy, but I wonder if this could be affected by IDE over SATA. One other question is that has XP or PC hardware changed so that I do not need drivers for SATA anymore?

Most new motherboards don't need SATA drivers, because SATA is provided by the main chipset. My nForce4 board didn't need SATA drivers to install Windows, whereas my previous two boards (a VIA one and an nForce2 one) did.

Might as well stick with SATA when all said and done. It's not particularly faster than IDE at this point in time, but it is a nwer technology nonetheless.

SATA is a faster means of moving data back and forth. While current drives don't use this to its full potential SATA isn't going anywhere so things can only get faster.

SATA cables are also tiny compared to the bloody bed spread you get connecting IDE devices together. This leads to a tidier case and improved airflow which leads to better temperatures. Always a good thing.

I am relatively new to SATA but the last 3 rigs I have built have all had SATA HDDs and I have had absolutely no problems installing Windows. As someone else has said the chipset covers SATA these days. I should also point out that XP SP2 probably has SATA drivers built in too - though I don't know this as a fact.
