Using Laptop HardDisk to IDE Cable Query

I've a cable that connects a 2.5inch laptop hard disk to an IDE cable so it can be used in a desktop machine.

I've never used it before but I gave it to a guy and he wasn't sure what side of the hard disk does the power pins go to.

He took a guess and a burning smell came out of it killing the drive.

I need to use the cable and I don't want to make the same mistake.

Does anyone know what side does pin1 of the connector go to on the hard disk?

I am using Toshiba hard disks.

Cheers

mmm i got my 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor this morning from ebay, similar to yours but without cable.

there are few marking on the adaptor, 1 and 40 etc, i think 1 goes to left side of 2.5 hard drive

not sure tbh

Found it.

I unscrewed the metal cover/caddie of the hard disk and on the green circuit board marks pin 1.

Pin 1 for me is on the right hand side, next to the seperate group of 4 pins that aren't used.

Hopefully I don't smell smoke.

EDIT:

Working great. :)
