I've got button mushrooms which expired 21st Feb. They've gone dark coloured on top. They smell perfectly fine though and the inside looks clean. Cook or bin?

Give them a good rinse, cook well, you'll be fine.

Trust me, I'm an IT engineer.

Use by dates, especially for fruit/veg is nonsense. Much better to look at it, smell it and use your judgement.

Anything veg, salad etc. I ignore the best before/use date and just go on how it looks/smells. I'm a bit more careful with meat but will still use stuff a few days past it's use by date as long as it seems ok.

Well I had a fresher pack of mushrooms which I used some of yesterday. I'm not sure I want mushrooms again just yet so will probably end up binning these old ones as they'll no doubt be properly off by the time I want them. Can I freeze fresh mushrooms in future? And can they be defrosted in the microwave, or just let them thaw in the fridge?

Best cook and then freeze. I've heard that uncooked mushrooms are not great to freeze.

you usually peel / trim them if they are getting on, keeping them in fridge in paper bag too, soaks up their sweating.
sautee older ones, and if you really can't bare to eat them, I suspect that would freeze ok.

I agree.
Generally we just wipe them off, or peel them.

Four foods you should avoid reheating
4. Mushrooms
Mushrooms have proteins which can easily be destroyed by enzymes and microorganisms, according to the European Food Information Council.

If they are not stored properly, mushrooms can deteriorate quickly and cause an upset stomach after reheating.
However, says the council: "If they are stored in a fridge and for not more 24 hours, it is in general no problem to reheat mushrooms again at recommended temperatures of 70 C."
But that is the EU lot and we will be out soon and what do they know anyway.

As most folk have said peel them, probably a good wash also. As long as there is no furry stuff I would say they will be ok but cook them asap.

I suppose you must really assess if you want to be awoken at 4am, running to the toilet with explosive Diarrhoea. I was unlucky enough to get salmonella poisoning once. It was grim.
