I have a spare 9500gt I would like to use as a physx card. Trouble is I have a HD4890 as a main card and I heard there was some issues regarding using this nvidia product alongside the ati one.

Could anybody give me some tips regarding how I might get these working together.

Thanks

Whats out there worth using a card for physx? batman? thats about it and the 9500GT is on the weak side for handling that even.

I am running an overclocked 4870 with a Zotac 9800GT Eco Edition on Windows 7 64bit, Arkham Asylum runs very smoothly at 1080p with 2x AA and max settings. Check out this page for info:

Here is a video guide:

It can get tricky setting up the games to work with PhysX and an ATI main display card, Batman was easy but Mirror's Edge needed me to delete or rename two .dll files. It is best to have the display output on the Nvidia card disabled with the new 10.2 Catalyst drivers otherwise you can't access CCC (you get an error on opening). So you need to enable the output on the Nvidia card only to enable PhysX, and then you have to disable it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say its not worth bothering with. I would sell the 9500gt or fold with it.

If you search this site you can find details how to do it.

When I added my 9600GT I had played batman but not mirrors edge. Mirror's edge I thought was a really good original game, and the physx effects were cute.

i had a physx card and to use them with an ati card is more hassle that its worth because you get next to nothing with it,unless you want the extra on the vantage scores lol

Thanks for the quick replies peeps. Physx does indeed seem to be more trouble than its worth, I'm thinking I need 2 monitors just to get it working with my ATI card, so not really worth the expense considering the minor performance boost it offers, on particular pieces of software.

Although I did see a post of some bloke modding a DVI->VGA adapter to make the graphics card think that there is a monitor attached to it.

If it has a vga port (or probably same on a DVI->VGA adapter) you can just connect 2 of the pins with a paperclip and it fools the OS.

I never needed to use a second screen, I just have my 40" TV connected to the ATI card and managed to get it all working fine with a dedicated Nvidia card. The only games that make it worthwhile are Batman and Mirror's Edge, so if you don't like them it is a waste of time really. I tried getting Cryostasis working but it seems a bit rough round the edges and jerky, so not worth the bother... Batman looks great though!

Someone released a hack in October that made it a lot simpler. You don't need a 2nd screen any more.

I'll be trying this out with an HD4850 and (free :)) 8600GTS sometime soon.

Oh and I think the Zotac 9800GT Eco is one of the best dedicated PhysX cards for the money as it uses little power and is a single slot design.

too bad physX is not worth it at all

saying that, its a spare card but if you have to take something out your PC for it than nope

As you said it's a spare card, try it and don't listen to the other guys, the only thing it will cost you is TIME to set it up. Ok there are not many games that use it, but I have played Batman and Dark Void has cool smoke effects. Metro 2033 and Just Cause 2 will be using it too.

2nd that.

It takes about 15-30 minutes to set it all up depending on how things go. I would try overclocking the 9500GT and test it with Fluidmark to see what scores and temps you get. I only set it up for Batman really, just to see what difference it made. I would say it is not worth it at the moment if you have to shell out for the card, but if you have it spare and can fit it in your PC then why not?
