Using portable hard drive constantly?

My macbook only has 60gb and my music collection has outgrown the space available. I've recently bought a iomega 320gb portable hard drive, just wondering whether it was safe to keep this external HDD constantly connected to the macbook and use it as like a internal drive?

The drive is going to be the same as the internal drive, just a standard 2.5" drive so as long as you don't put it in a hot place it'll be as good as your internal.
