Hi,

If I format a hdd can I then use recuva to gain access to files I previous deleted?

I.e. word, jpg files?

pls advise

cheers

Provided the format didn't include "zero'ing" the drive, and no data has been written since the format, then yes, data should still be accessible.

sorry i dont quite understand what you mean...

currently their is info on drive (that is important but I cannot access), windows is a mess..

I would format the drive and then reinstall windows...

so can I use recuva to gain access to those files?? after I reinstalled windows?

Please clarify..

After reinstalling windows I would then install recuva first to find the files...

not sure if recuva can get files after it has been formatted. and nothing should stop you from being able to access the files even if windows is a mess. either set it up as a slave drive and copy what you need or maybe use a bootable cd (ask in the linux forum).

It's possible but some might be overwritten by the reinstall. That would be a very bad way to go about recovery, access the drive from a working install and copy the files over. or if you have no other system just do a repair installation which will leave everything intact except the Windows files.

I cant access the files because I cannot enter the user account...

basically someone put a cd into drive and now if i install a program it will not install properly , error msg - registry errors...

The cd they installed has corrupted key windows files, so when I installed recuva the laptop was having none of it...

I tried to run windows repair but needed an admin password which I dont have..

so the only solution I can see is to reinstall windows then run recuva..

if you have any better ideas - i am all ears :)

look at the recuva homepage.... it's looks a fairly basic program to me. i very doubt it will recover files from a formatted drive. besides, installing windows will just overwrite the files anyway. i'd forget recuva.....

as i said in my previous post, set it up as slave drive in another pc and copy the files across. job done.

I'd agree. It is more for recovering stuff you just deleted by accident than being good enough to recover stuff from an overwritten disk.

You can access them from another machine/install, you'll just need to take ownership or even do it via a LiveCD.

its a toshiba satellite s1800 series laptop btw

anyhow ive taken the hdd drive, where can I get a hdd enclosure so I can attach an IDE cable to it to remove the files I need?

Are they expensive? How do I know which one to get?
