Using Res top as inlet

Hi guys

I have the EK D5 pump Res combo. The one with three ports in the top.

In my loop it makes for a much cleaner loop if I use one of these top ports as an inlet.

It just occurred to me though that this may cause unwanted noise as the water splashes and perhaps creates bubbles etc.

I've looked into this and ek do sell a special top that can be used with some internal splash tubes to prevent this. This top doesn't fit my pump Res combo though unfortunately.

I've been looking at buying some plastic tube and just inserting myself, held by a friction fit.

This would work it's just getting hold of the right size tube.

My question is am I right to be concerned? Or can the Res be filled to a point where splashing won't be an issue? Or am I missing an obvious way of resolving this?

I could use the side inlet but it's just not in a great position in my case.

All EK multiport tops should work with their return tube. Which D5 combo do you have, which "special" top are you looking at?

But yes, you'd be correct in thinking it's best to not just splash the return into the res. You're unlikely to be able to just use friction though, it's best to screw the tube in. If for some reason EK's own return tubes don't work, all of those ports are G1/4 thread so in theory you can buy something like Barrow's threaded acrylic tube, cut to length and then screw into the port. However, be aware of the total thickness of the res top because you're putting a pair of fittings into a single port, so you need a minimum of 5mm thickness each side in order to screw in (the threaded portion is generally 5mm long).

You can see that this is threaded and mine isn't. So it won't fit.

You are right, my res top only has around 5mm of material thickness so I can screw something in from both sides that why I was considering just using a friction fit.

With the compression fitting screwed into the pump top the inner dia of the fitting is approx 8.7mm. I've ordered some 8mm tube so I'm hoping that will hold with a friction fit. I know it sounds a bit Heath Robinson but if needed I was going to wrap the tube with some rubber from a bike inner tube to provide the friction fit I need. My hope is that will hold.

Ah, you have the glass one. Yeah, different set up entirely. The glass ones are held together by that big steel rod in the middle, rather than threads in the acrylic and POM to screw them together.

If you're going friction fit though I'd suggest PTFE tape rather than bike inner tube, who knows if it will have a negative effect on the coolant.
 
Good idea mate. It shouldn't actually touch the coolant as the PTFE tape will just be around the tube. I can't think of any other way of doing it.

I just find it a bit poor of EK to say that you can use these ports as inlets but then give you no method of attaching a anti splash pipe.

The only way i could think is you will likely need a spacer anyway, due to the recess in the top for the plug heads.

Cut the 1/4" thread down on the fitting/spacer, only needs probably 2mm off. Cut the 1/4" thread on the tube down. Acrylic though so extremely brittle. Or leave as is.

That way you can screw in the spacer, or fitting in the top. Then screw the tube in the bottom. The tube will only need a thread if that. Depending on the thread type of the tube itself. Or just use say a stainless g1/4 barrel nipple as a replacement for the clear tube.

Obviously all of the above depends on the clearance to the inner stainless tube and the thickness of the actual acetal top.

Sweet, a combo extension and pipe! Screw that pupper into your res, then whack the fitting in the top. Oh EK, how you do fail these days...
 
Sorry to jump in on this, but be aware....and I found out the hard way......when using the multiport top, you cant just screw barbs directly into it, you need to buy extenders too, crafty......the resess in the top is too deep for barbs to securly go sraight in, and although they will catch, they will also knacker the threads up: https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-res-x3-top-v2-multiport

Was just going by what was wrote on the description.

Reservoir's top features three ports, three G1/4" threaded ports, which are intended as fill port. Any of the top ports can be also used as an inlet port in that case EK-Extender M-F G1/4" must be used. Both, top and bottom, are made of quality POM Acetal material. Additionally, a PU anti-vortex foam is enclosed and can be used to reduce excessive vortex issues.

Thought it was suggesting to use one of the longer extenders as inner fill tube thing.

Just re-read jamins post and remembered i got caught out by this issue myself a few years ago when i had a water cooled system. :p :p
 
I have this setup on my custom loop with a multiport top installed on a D5 pump/res combo. I installed the little inner tube (40mm I think) to stop splashing etc. and it works great. If you do decide to use one of the recessed ports at the top the multiport comes with some little m-f extenders which fit inside the recessed bits. If you don't use those it'll leak.
 
This is what I used in the end. This was with the standard res top not the multi port. There was just enough thread to hold it from the bottom and have a fitting in the top. The fitting I used was a small extender type as these have a shorter thread.
