Not sure where to post this so feel free to move it.

Heading of to France for a weekend in February and am planning on using TomTom I have installed on my phone.

Does anyone have any experience of TomTom abroad. Is it reliable as using it in the UK or is it going to send me on a wild goose chase?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Assuming you've got recent maps for the area you are using it in, it should be as unreliable as it is in the UK.

The accuracy is totally dependant on quality of the maps, assuming you've got a satalite signal etc.

I think you need to have the european maps, as opposed to the UK maps, so make sure you have the EU version and not just the UK one.

That's what I've heard at least.

Well that was stating the obvious a little bit :)
It is highly unlikely that the major roads of France, Belgium, etc are going to be included on a set of UK maps.

As far as I am aware there are two tomtom software map sets sold in the UK.

UK & European Major Roads

and

UK and Rest of Western Europe

The full set will navigate down to postcode/street level. The basic ones only include major roads so will typically navigate you to a city centre if you catch my meaning?

I have the Western Europe maps

That being the case you will be absolutely fine if my experiences of driving in France and Germany are anything to go by. I was able to drive around confidently and drive off on tangents safe in the knowledge that at the end of the day I could just set the satnav to take me back to the campsite/hotel.

I've used PDA v5/6 in the US with no problems. Usually takes a few minutes to get a fix first time you fire it up.

Just got back from a drive to the Alps using a Tom Tom XL with Western Europe maps, worked absolutely fine. Be prepared to fork out a fair bit in Tolls, have to say they are worth it though, pretty much empty and lovely and smooth.

Got to agree with mattpc - our trip to the nurburgring was without motoring mishaps and we went to some random places. Both our Nav's worked fine and we were able to interchange who was 'leading' without it upsetting the route.

I used TomTom 6 with the Major Roads of Western Map this year and last when driving through Spain. Worked like a charm most of the time. The only difficulties we encountered was dealing with new road layouts which hadn't been incorporated into the map. There's a lot of building work going on in Spain but obviously it is far less of an issue in France. Another odd quirk I found (when in Spain) it that I couldn't see airports listed - For example, I tried 'aeropuerto' and 'Santander airport / aeropuerto' but it didn't seem to list it.

As for wild goose chases, it will do that about as much as it will do it in the UK.

Yeah, maps of Western Europe will be ok in France. I got to the South and back with a primitive version of TomTom maps of western europe a couple of years back.
