using VLC for vid converting

I need to convert some xvid avi movie files. VLC player appears to have that function under "convert/save".

Problem is that the resulting vid file has a starting time index of 14 hours, 25 minutes or whatever instead of 0:0. It's playable via VLC but my TV USB playback gets confused.

What is causing VLC to do that? I can't see any parameter or option relating to that.

What are you converting to?

Handbreak (another freebee) will convert to .mp4/.4mv or .mkv files!

I think target was H264 mpg.

I want a user friendly converter. I'll look at handbrake.

Edit: trying out handbrake now. My TV USB playback recognizes mkv. Looks like a sensible prog thus far....
