using wifi for gaming

well BT want £165 to move my phone socket which is bit ott... I have had a network cable running up the stairs for 1 year, but redoing the house now and i need a better solution, was thinking i should just buy a good wifi card.. or the other option is to drill a hole through front room ceiling upto my study..

who plays on wifi?
 
I play over wifi and my connection is good enough to game on (7-10mbps, 30-60 ping). But usually I'm in the same room as the router.

I do notice a drop in performance upstairs but it's still playable.

In the past I've just run a length of Cat5e into the attic because the performance was just too poor to be enjoyable.


Presumably BT have given you a router at some point? Have you tried gaming with it?

I can't remember what it's called but there's a way to use your home's power cables to create a wired network throughout your house.
 
Forget wireless for online gaming.

Either do as suggested above or run a network cable around the outside of your house.

Just drill two holes through the wall, feed a network cable through, fix the cable to the wall with cable clips into the mortar, fill the holes with silicon sealant to stop drafts.

At the end of the day that's basically all BT will do anyway. And that's what Sky or cable do when then do any new set up.
 
I used to use wireless, (netgear wpn111 usb adapter). It was terrible, the speeds were slow, the adapter heated up and caused the system to crash. Tried a set of comtrend homeplugs, sadly they didnt work with the wiring in my house. So i got a very long ethernet cable, and havent looked back since.
 
just tested a half decent wifi card and its lame, i was getting higher pings but also glitches and lag.

ok if anyone has any more info on plug wifi things that would be cool.

Had to buy them for where I am right now, wifi was fine in my old flat/router and is still fine on my laptop but here it results in large spikes every 30seconds - 5minutes.

Just google homeplug or ethernet over powersupply, pretty much any modern pair (85Mbps+) will be good enough for general usage. Only really need more if you plan on moving a lot of large files across your LAN or stream HD video from one PC to another etc.

Oh and make sure you buy a pair :P

house is strange setup the ground floor is split into two large rooms with stairs up the middle, the gumbos before had the phone socket in by the front door which is next to the stairs... so drilled through into the front room and that looks fine after a paint and tidy. my study is at the other end of the room (upstairs) so the red line is the planned route of the network cable (which i would prefer i guess) the house has 4 pillairs in each corner running up the wall, solid, so would have to clip the cable, but due to lay out i cant run the cable on the outside of the house

Either Homeplugs or get some external grade Cat 5/6e and run the cable outside.

External grade Cat cable is weather/UV resistant.

That's how I run mine, but possibly cheaper & easier to use the Homeplugs option
 
I've used wifi for ages while gaming and haven't had a single problem. Wifi signal is good and my ping times are fine. Don't listen to the naysayers!
 
I've used home plugs for the last couple of years, Actually have a switch coming from my home plug, to the pc and ps3. Can't fault them tbh.

Agreed. Gaming with simultaneous connections too. Wifi is fine, unless you're on the edge of range or something.
