I was once overtaking a lorry on the motorway and one of the tyres blew out in the trailer as I was passing it. It frightened the bejesus out of me.

Don't think the company we use at work will do stuff like that at the side of the road any more on fast roads without either police or highways in attendance or a 2nd recovery vehicle providing a shield. I still see plenty who do however.
Which studies have shown is no less dangerous than having a conversation while holding the phone.
But since its legal people seem to overlook this inconvenient fact when moralising about other people holding their phone while having a conversation

Seen two drivers doing hippy crack whilst driving today. Even one was filling a balloon from a cream charger whilst driving so no hands on the steering wheel

I have never answered my phone or respond to a text whilst driving. If people don’t understand why I didn’t respond immediately because I was driving, they need their heads’ sorting
He is right though, the difference is negligible. There was a good part in the Monkey Paradox about it, it's also been wrote about again a few times. But the talking part is far worse than the simple motor mechanic to hold your phone.
Not that I care either way, it's just interesting.
I think they just implemented the handsfree rule because they know it's not practical to completely ban any phone related activity when driving, and that talking on the phone is no more dangerous than many other totally legal things you can do in a car. The main point of the law is to stop people from doing what that truck driver was doing, i.e. taking your eyes off the road to look at a phone screen which is clearly a far bigger risk to others than having a phone to your ear. Insisting on handsfree makes it far easier for them to enforce and stops people claiming they just picked up the phone to accept the call etc.

epitomized by the plane crash where they failed to see they had run out of fuel whilst trying to fix an undrcarrage problem, but in motorist context people on hands free just looking at the road, without seeing potential hazards, they also had evidence that concentration is not immediately restored when call ends
Probably waiting for a prosecution where someone is prosecuted for being distracted irrespective to the fact they were on hands-free, at which point (like with cigarettes) would the car manufacturers be able to abdicate responsibility.
