Anyone still play this by any chance?

I have started playing this again recently, mainly iCTF lots of empty servers but there is ALWAYS players to be found on at least 3 servers at any time so its good.

Anyone interested in playing this again..

I did try again about two years back but even then it was dead with a handful of servers. All I could find was a server where they played the same two maps (Onslaught - the only mode I really played) over and over again with the same boring tactics every time. After being dictated how I should play the game by an anal player I gave up with it. It's dead to me now. :(

HI

I play this all the time, my most played game...theres a good community on the LDG Assault/Racing server.

A mix of assault and racing maps, most of the people who frequent there regularly are pretty easy going.

Still prefer UT'99.

Always makes for a good laugh to get a LAN server going for that and have 5 or 6 people murdering each other senseless :D

UT99 Instagib CTF is the most fast paced game I've ever played, used to play on some Belgium server, 4games/4player something like that, was only 14 slots but massively popular!

While I've always been more of a Quake fan, I really did love UT2004! Fantastic levels and environments (a sense of scale you didn't get in Quake), and Onslaught and Instagib are both awesome :) I haven't played it for quite a few years now though :/ I think I was expecting people to move over to UT3, but it ended up being... not very good :P

Definitely :D

2K4 looks nice, but it just doesn't have magic IMO.

wow been a while since I played ut2004! (see almost 9 years ago on an exs laptop xD ) absolutely loved ut99!! and I could just about play it on 56k lol :p I did buy UT3 but.... as I expet many people found it... really clunky and slow in comparison :\ took the characters and all they fat ass slow movement from gears of war and pasted them in basically (seriously....look at the dude on the box for GoW and UT3.....SAME GUY?!?!?!?).

but yea I then started playing quake :D good fun! still play quake live now :D though I've been doing the training centers (rocket jumps and speed jumping) to try and improve my movement. just can't to the very last rocket jump (big S hallway, number 6 on all 3) and the start of hall 3 on speed jumping....just can't strafe jump to keep the pace to keep skimming over the platforms :(

I do miss the impact hammer though.... running about with that thing charged hoping to run into someone lol xD that and the ******* sword!! :D

I recommend you try watching some tutorials on Defrag. Strafe jumping properly takes practice but you will soon pick it up, as well as circle jumping and rocket jumping. Also, you must make sure you have 125 FPS, and /cg_pmove is set to 1 (or /cg_pmovefixed 1 - I am not sure what commands QL uses.)

To see FPS use /cg_drawfps 1, and to change FPS use /com_maxfps 125 - I wouldnt use higher than 125 as PB used to kick for it. Also, if you are on a 60hz monitor you are best disabling vsync and use the command /r_swapinterval 0

If using a 120hz monitor you will need to use /r_displayrefresh 120 followed by /vid_restart.

yeah I suck at the strafe jumping... like I can kinda do it but not to the level required/speed. oooo thanks for those tips though, shall give them a whirl and yea, 120Hz monitor ;)

so what's the importance of these settings?

yeah I've watched some tutorials.... I just can't seem to replicate :p

The game engine is optimised for 125FPS. With pmove enabled, or the fixes applied it fixes movement issues meaning you can make the jumps you couldn't make if it wasnt enabled. Again some jumps can only be made with 125 FPS.

The trick to strafe jumping is simply alternate your strafe buttons and hold them as you jump. But if you want to strafe jump fast you need to flick your mouse from side to side too, but you have to do it in time with your jumps and in the same direction as the strafe key you are using - also the size of the arc you make can have a bearing on your speed. This video explains it a little better:

You will notice some players have quite a pronounced left to right flick with their mouse, like Cetus on Coldrun:

ahhh cheers :D shall have a look when I get home :) with the config settings, do I have to do them each load up? only once? is there a .cfg file I can add them in like start-up parameters (for the game obv :p )

I kinda do that first video, I mean.... it's what I try xD well I'd just try switching where I notice he does the first two jumps with the same direction and then alternates. probably more just my timing than anything :)

(gotten a bit off topic sorry haha xD)

Never really liked UT2k4 that much for some reason though I played a ton of UT99, playing tokara forest in onslaught mode was kind of trippy though.

For lols my old Q3 CTF team (top tier US tournie team) played some random CTF matches against a competitive UT team... and got reeeamed (bare in mind that for most of us this was literally the first time we'd even stepped foot in UT2k4) - didn't know it at the time but it was recorded - happened to run into the footage recently:

Bit painful to watch but as I say we literally had no idea what we were doing.

EDIT: What you see in that video + about 4 hours on tokara is literally the total of my time spent playing ut2k4 heh.

Yeah i still boot it up from time to time, there are a lot of servers still open! pretty good for a 10 year old game.

Still love some Igib CTF !

Another one is UT:Black still holds to the test of time.
