ut3 card for around £100

I ran the UT3 demo on my old X1800XT: 1680x1050 with max settings gave me about 30fps.

The demo only had texture and world settings up to medium (3/5). Just to give you an idea, my laptop which has a 7950GTX 512MB which is about the same power as a 7950GT in a desktop can handle the game at 1440x900 on high (4/5) getting 35-60fps

If it's £100 you want to spend, it's got to be an HD3850. No point economising below that really.

my 7900GT on the 1280x1024 res on full settings....

i get 30-40fps its playable.... however id drop world detail to 4/5 to get it kept above 40fps for that bit smoother... 7900gt is just about the limit to play it full.. u need to get sumthing better than that in the 8 range really.

Matt.

The 3850 is DEFINITELY your best bet. It will do 1280x1024 max details without ever even coming close to dipping below the 62fps limit

should be perfect mate, the X1950 uses loads more power, they reckon you near enough crossfire 2x 3850's on a 400-450 :D

My 1950 runs fine on a 380w, so you should be fine mate. friends quad core with 4gig ram and 3850 runs perfect on 420w too :)

Edit:

just checked a review, they use less than both an 8600gt and 2600xt....genius

Just a quick question, I have an X1950 Pro, E4300 at 3.2GHz, 2GB and 32-bit Vista - how will UT3 run at 1680x1050?

you should be ok, i would reckon mid 30's + on the demo tbh. bare in mind that the demo "max settings" are supposedly mid in the full game...or so i was told

tbf, mid settings look pretty enough, i imagine your CPU will mean much better performance than my system too

Max settings in demo are same as in game.

I don't want to start another thread when I've got a similar question, so I'll give it a crack in here. I hope nobody minds.

I just put some new cooling on my 1950pro and it's still giving me artifacts at temps as low as 35c. Dots here and there, and lurking here I get thin dotty lines in the blue background. So, I guess I need a new card and I've got a budget of about a £100. Is the HD3850 the best way to go, and how much of a performance increase will I see over the 1950 if I was to get one?

UT3 managed to run more or less fine on my old X1800XT before i upgraded to the 8800GT, there was the occasional slowdown but it was smooth 90% of the time. They're going for practically nothing these days too, so have a look in the members market for one sometime. Mine went for £45, which is cheap as chips.
