UT3, Quake Arena

UT3 is still played by a small group of hardcore fans. I am one of them, and think it is a real shame that the game is not more widely played.
I agree, UT3 is a good game that for some reason has not got the online fanbase. I play it too, but am getting a bit fed up of some idiots online who are very good players, but also tend to insult other players. Kids, must be getting old!

Overbounce was removed fairly early in beta (for the most part tho I've still had it happen randomly very infrequently - pretty much impossible to replicate it any more tho).

The physics are still there just everyone has the effect of 125fps locked regardless of what their fps is actually at.

Theres a varitery of game modes and more added since I last played, when I last played most of the OSP/3wave maps weren't in for various legal reasons but there was several CTF maps from team arena, some original ones made by the QL team some of which were pretty decent and/or loosely based on the better 3wave maps.

Well theyve got Q3CTF2 so Im happy. Really nice to go down memory lane - would have loved the 3W maps, but oh well...

Ok, but "no skill" game is still completely miss-guided description of QL esp. when COD and similar are mainstream FPS games of today. If you compare vanilla Q3 vs. QL then you could hardly claim QL to be "dumbed"down version instead I would call it just "tweaked" mainly to make the gameplay more balanced, better graphics, tweaked maps etc.

I agree, there are mostly differences not necessarily dumbed down as such. There are certain things I like and certain differences I don't like. And it seems this is mainly a personal prefs thing.

IMO the "dumbed-down" view comes from players disliking the 'newbie' friendly aspects, and players who just don't get deathmatch, coming from a cod style fps genre. Some of these guys dont understand why the graphics are 'cartoony' and the physics and speed and the jumping. Simliar to the way folk dismiss mario as a kids only game. As for cpma players I think it's fair to say there is massive dissapointment that ql does not have a pro mode like it.

Just found it - they were called overbounces and caused by enabling pmove and jumping on particular parts of the map - was found out by trickjumpers quite late in Q3s life - pretty sure it was in one of the opcpromo vids - will try and find which one...

Watch from the 55sec mark for a few seconds and youll see what I mean - b3nt f t w :D...

Cool video, I would love to get back into Q3 I must have lost 1000's of hours with q3 it cost me 2 relationships :)

Yeah, they got rid of the bounce bugs. Haven't played QL for months, must get back to it. I'll be very rusty. Trouble with Quake is that although you can get back into it quick, after a break it takes weeks to really hone your aim again properly.

Here's my short video of my two quick campgrounds jumps. I'm no trick jumper though like michael flately and campinggaz, though I did a bit of it :p

Hmm Q3F rings a bell - class based or something? Dont think I ever played it though

Did anyone play Urban Terror? Quite enjoyed that as my first taste of a complete mod

First time I landed those jumps I was so friggin happy.

I played urban terror for a while back in the day. I actually fired it up again the other month and got seriously destroyed. IMO time has not been kind to it, and it's pretty unforgiving.

I still play Urban Terror on and off. It's still got a reasonable community and there's a new version coming out soon as the developers have licensed the engine to release a standalone version of the game.

I was always pretty rubbish at the various quick jumps (e.g. the first DM6 jump posted above - I really sucked at that, though the second one was fairly easy iirc). But my general movement and aim was reasonable. Sadly whenever I've gone back to Q3/QL I seem to have forgotten all of my old skills:)

Just installed this after many years of gathering dust. Had to use ioquake3 to even get it to install "win7 64" another problem, when i start the game the intro movie turns off my monitor, loss of signal.. usualy get round this when it happens by editing a file of config to disable intro movies but can't find a command for it in Quake 3 :(

slightly off topic take a look at these specs

Got tired of trying to get orignal to work, went the Qlive option, not too shabby a setup. Ok for a few mins old school fragging :)

My aim and movement are well rusty though :)

IIRC you can't disable the intro movie from the config file with quake 3 you need to use -nosplash after the exe filename in the target bit of shortcut used to launch it.

------------

For completeness this was my setup for launching quake 3 in this case into the OSP mod:

"E:\Games\Quake III Arena\quake3.bat" -nosplash +set com_hunkmegs 512 +set com_zonemegs 16 +set com_soundmegs 24 +set fs_cdpath "E:\Games\Quake III Arena\customdata" +set fs_game "osp"

quake3.bat said:
@echo off
sc START pnkbstrA > NUL
quake3.exe %*
sc STOP pnkbstrA > NUL
sc STOP pnkbstrB > NUL

RE the fs_cdpath I had a folder called customdata inside the quake 3 folder, with a folder in that called baseq3 that I used to dump custom maps into rather than clutter up the main baseq3 folder - as a level desiginer it was an easier way to keep a "clean" install of the game without custom 3rd party assets to deal with when developing stuff. I used the batch so that punkbuster wasn't running in the background when I wasn't playing, used to try and keep XP as lean as possible back in those day :S

Cheers for the info Rroff, nice and detailed there.

I'll stick with Quake live for now though, but i've saved your post as a note in my Quake 3 folder for reference.

I even went into the pak files and deleted the movies as well as making an Autoexe.cfg with commands that i thought might disable them as well, still no luck getting it to work though :(

Quake live was just too easy a temptation to sort it i'm afraid :)
