Utter noob with cooling - fans being volatile

and what are people's thoughts on the corsair aio stuff? the rgb stuff.. ;)
Corsiar AIO are really CLCs .. factory sealed with no way to service or repair as needed, cost significantly mor than air coolers, don't cool any better, usually make more noise, don't last as long, and when they die your system is SOL until new cooler is installed. A good air cooler is about half the price of CLC, will last virtually forever with maybe a new fan after 6+ years and even if a fan does fail any fan will work held on with rubber bands until new fan is in hand.

As forRGB stuff .. it doesn't cool anything. :D

:D appreciate that.

it's just the first build that i'm trying to care about the aesthetic with. i'm sure an air cooler will do a great job but there's something of having a big chunky thing protruding from the motherboard that keeps making me look towards AIO.

is there a compromise, or am i screwed?

i have honeslty just ordered the h100i to try it out, but i could always cancel...

sigh, i hate these things :D

I would cancel it, but I have always hated CLCs. Higher priced product wihtout the cooling ability of air costing about half as much but selling because of all the hype about them being 'water cooling' like real custom loop water cooling. They are about as much 'water cooling' as a glider pilot is a fighter pilot.

To me using CLC is trading one block over CPU for stiff black snakes laying in the case to work around.

I would get a good looking air cooler. Cryorig R1 look nice. Phantkes PH-TC14PE, be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4. I don't remember what motherboard and case you have .. or what RAM. If I knew I could tell you what the clearances are and what coolers will fit.

fractal design define mini c!

corsair vengeance rgb pro ram. the ryzen tuned stuff.

motherboard is the msi mortar max!

yeah, you're probably right. maybe i should just go air :)

Define Mini CL has 170mm CPU clearance which is more than enough for even tallest coolers.

According to Hexes Vengeance RGB Pro is 51mm tall, 7mm taller than normal Vengeance RGB RAM .. so a problem with many coolers as well as possible problems wiht airflow cooling motherboard components around them.

AMD B450 Mortar Max has 84mm center CPU to near side of PCIe socket and 53mm center CPU to near side of RAM socket. That is lots of room toward PCIe sockets but need to be careful with fan on front of coolers. Even most single tower coolers have front of fan at least 53-55mm in front of center CPU.

What kind of look in cooler do you like?

The best value in coolers is TRUE Spirit 140 Power but fan might not fit on front behind RAM. It will work just fine with fan on back of cooler.

so the ram might cause me an issue then? damn you RGB ram!

considering those facts, will any of those coolers work that you recommended? i'll do a bit of research myself!

Cryorig R1 Universal will for sure.
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 front of cooler would be over RAM about 7mm and all of fan would be over RAM. Fan would need to be mounted so it's top is about 4mm above top of cooler for front fan to clear.
PH-TC14PE will fit over RAM but 140mm fan will not fit between your 51mm tall RAM and case because there is only about 124mm between top of your super-tall RAM and side cover.

Again, what coolers look good to you? Scythe Mugen 5 will fit and it's a good cooler too. Thermalright ARO-M14O and ARO-M14G will fit.

the dark rock pro 4 has caught my eye recently so it stands to reason it pops up here! is it a good cooler? but bit annoying if it's covering the ram, and if it'll look a little skewed to make it fit.

Yes, it's quite good. A few degrees warmer than very best while being one of if not the quietest. Slower fan speed makes cooler quieter at the expense of running a little warmer.

If it's the black color you like, I've used rattle can of matte black paint sprayed almost straight down onto top of a cooler blacks out the top and just edges of other fins so cooler still cools very well but look black. Even better use water soluble rattle can and if you don't like it you can wash it off. ;)

i do quite like the look of it. not sure if it's worth giving it a go to see what it looks like, and whether it gives me a really decent push down in temps.

could always return if it gets in the way too much.

Are you OC'ing? If not just get the Dark Rock 4 - Thats what I have on my 2600X it looks nicer and keeps it plenty cool enough, only thing I would replace it for is a black Noctua but they arent out yet

i think this build i want to allow myself to dabble in OC'ing. it's been too long since i put time into it.

well, it came last night and after a lot of fiddling, i got it installed. looks good tbf for a big cooler in a micro atx case!

seems to be doing a decent job of cooling too! probably knocked a good 10c ish off the stock.

having a strange one where i can't seemingly change the fan speeds, regardless of what i set in bios. just sits at 1500rpm :D i'll work it out i'm sure...

but yeah, thanks for the help guys!

@Lovejoy! u should have gone aio i have two in mine. So many people keep saying there crap and never even used them.

I have had full custom loops in the past cost a fortune as i had sli for a few gens trying different fans rads fittings

then thought id try a number of aio's and was suprised how well the good ones cooled

True some where shockly ***** but now very happy with what i have

I have a 2080ti on 240mm aio @ 2055 temps max out at 50C

Delid 8700k @ 5Ghz 0Avx on a 280mm aio max 70C - 80C under prime

Some times u just need to try things out for your self

Idcooling frostflow 280 £50 worth a try
