• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

V-Sync? Hmmm

Vsync ought to be set on a per-game basis.

On titles where the framerate is consistently above the monitor refresh rate, vsync should usually be enabled. Failing to do so means the video card will draw frames you'll never see and you're just heating up your PC for no good reason. The exception to the rule are games which, for reasons best known to the developers, cause the framerate to drop to half the monitor refresh when vsync is enabled. Bad programming will always generate exceptions (pun intended).

Where your frame rate is lower than the monitor refresh, even if it only blips under periodically, you will usually see smoother movement with vsync disabled. As others have mentioned, there will also be tearing and its up to personal taste whether this is more objectionable than jerkier movement.

COD4 mouse movement feels unresponsive as hell with vsync enabled, although I hardly notice any tearing with it disabled anyway.

Funnily enough, since owning an xbox 360 I've actually got used to the odd tearing in games + still gaming on a 120hrtz crt kinda helps as well.

My COD4 fps sits at 90/91 never higher, any reason for this?
Yes, it's because that's what the framerate is capped at by default.

To change the cap to 125 (for example) you'll need to type /com_maxfps 125 into the console. :)

I've had a weird problem recently that may be VSYNC related. I'm not sure when it started to happen, but when I play any game now or video, I get a scan line go up the screen quite slowly

I've reset and fiddled with all the options in the ATI CCC to do with DVI frequencies etc. I'm still using the same cables, resolution and refresh rates and such. The image doesnt tear in games, there is just a slow "ripple" that goes up the screen and then starts at the bottom again.

Any ideas?
