Hmmm,

I think my girlfriend has been picking up on my engine talk too much. She is insisting she wan't a 2.3 litre V4 twin turbo because it's different!

Obviously i'm not sure she's 100% serious, but it got me thinking, was there ever a V4 engine made?

My brother thinks that there was a sierra with one? :confused: :)

Seems like a really pointless engine for a sierra, with all that space. Was it just the essex v6 with 2 cylinders chopped?

How much power did the 2.0 v4 have compared top the 2.0 pinto?

All I need now is a sierra and two T2's :D :eek:

The Essex was the Ford UK V4, the Taunus was the Ford Germany V4 which Saab also used for a number of years. It was funny a few years back when Saab (owned by GM) took a Sonett to the Goodwood circuit and stuck a banner over it stating "Powered by GM". With a Ford V4 under the bonnet :)

I think they were MK1 Capri Engines in the late 1960's, i know there was a 1.7 V4, and i'm pretty sure there were one or two others.

The V4 OHV 1996cc engine produced 85bhp and came with a Weber carburettor as standard. Unfortunately the Marcos 2 litre was let down by the less than reliable V4 unit.

All wrong! Ford V4's were in the Corsair 2000E and there was a smaller one as well. Not a particularly powerful or useable engine it was dropped. On second thoughts there may well have been one in the very early Capris before the Pinto came along. It had an awesome close ratio gearbox on the end of it, well sought after for Mk1/2 Escorts, Anglias and Mk1/2 Cortinas.

Going by the lack of pictures in Google it looks like they made more toys than real cars:

Edit: bugger beaten to it :D

Yes, the Ford V4 was in the Corsair and the Capri, but IIRC (and I may be wrong) it was originally developed for the Mk1 Transit.

The Ford V4 were horrible engines, best left consigned to history.

from http://experts.about.com/e/v/v/V4.htm

Lancia produced several narrow-angle V4 engines from the 1920s through 1960s for cars like the Lambda, Augusta, Artena, Aprilia, Ardea, Appia, and Fulvia. These were a spiritual predecessor for Volkswagen's VR6 family.

The Ford of Europe produced two totally different V4 engines with a balance shaft, one in the UK and one in Germany:
* The British Ford Essex V4 engine
* The German Ford Taunus V4 engine (also used by Saab)

The Russian manufacturer ZAZ also produced air cooled V4s with a balance shaft called MeMZ-965 and MeMZ-966. The only difference seems to be that the first gives 26 hp while the latter gives 27 hp.

V4 engines are also commonly found in motorcycles, for instance the
* Honda VF and VFR
* Honda Pan European
