Still not got my v5, only just remembered coz I need to retax the beast at the end of the month.

checked out DVLA and it says I have to pay £19 to get a new V5, whats to stop me just saying I own every car on the road? seems n odd process, I still have the tear off slip bit from the old v5 so I guess im ok when the filth tug me?

oh and can I get tax for it with only the tear off bit? if not im scuppered :)

They are also taking a long time for me. From memory they have usually been pretty swift, so dont know whats going on...

Im pretty sure you can tax it with the slip.

Yes you can, my missus did with my motorbike.
Unless it was a dodgy P.O.

they contact the previous owner when you order a new v5 to check that you are the new owner in regards to the question in the op

If the owner gave you the tear off slip, then you can apply for a V5 for free, because it's not your fault that he didn't send it off or because of an error int he system.(the details are on the form for the 2 exceptions)

I purchased a car recently and the guy didn't have the V5, so i had to pay £19, but i received the V5 in my name in 10 days

Which i thought was quick, as they need to check with the previous registered keeper, the bloke i bought it off wasn't as he'd bought it off a dealer who never registered it in his name and he never appiled for a V5 in the month he had it.
