Hey there

My friend is certain that his old Mini City would handle better than my parents Golf V6 4 motion. He also mentioned it would be faster off the lights and it would keep up with the Golf up to 60mph? :p

Just making sure i have a good reason to laugh at him?

the mini might handle better due to its weight, which could also mean it could beat the golf off the line. After all, the key to quick acceleration is less weight.

Yer, you probably do! However dont forget 2wd > 4wd on a dry track. Bring in the weather though and its a different story!

There is no way that a Mini based on a ~50 year old design would handle better than a Hot hatch designed in the late 90's.

It would murder the mini in all area's other than "being a death-trap" were the mini would win hands-down :p

Mini's feel fast for several reasons, they're made from tin foil so very noisy, they're light so chuckable, and your arse is scraping the ground giving you a feeling of speed.

All these "feelings" of speed don't actually make it that fast, at all!

I know a guy with a Mini Cooper (old mini but a newish one if you know what I mean) and I can murder him in ALL conditions.

EDIT - Can Mini's actually do 60mph? Your mate doesn't know what he's talking about, laugh at him, lots.

Ok.. so this thread has already started on the mini-banging score..

For the large majority, those people that say minis have carp handling, slow off the line blah blah blah havent ever actually driven one.
As for the handling, it is one of the most balanced cars I have driven and the suspension setup (dual wishbones) is still considered the best and most adaptable around at the moment. Most of the minis on the road have had the suspension sag and is just plain horrible, but as far as the origninal standard setup went, its virtually impossible to find anything that handles as well (in its own league, naturally)

Ok so compared to a V6 Golf, it might get thrashed (read slapped into hell) certainly in a straight line but its size and weight means on a roundabout, it'll probably stick better. By all means, on a tack it'd lose but you why have the 100s mph when a simple 30mph makes you feel like your gonna die :o :D

Perhaps not but would it handle better than a lardy Golf with dodgy Haldex? :p

Ever driven a haldex equiped car or even been out in one?

The 4 motion wasnt known as the best handling car but that wasnt due to haldex the fwd were as bad and they didnt have a lardy v6 at the front.

to true, i agree

the one i drove was awsome, mad me go straight to ebay looking for one, only to find i hadnt enough money. :(
feels good to say iv had a speedo off the clock. lol. shame the clock only went to 90.

Minis are great, they didnt win rallies by being crap!

However, as mentioned most minis that people drive now are saggy old lumps that are nothing like the day they left the factory.

(Take these two cars fresh from factory)Decent cooper s works, and put it against the lardy golf? I know where my money would lie on a kart track, and i know where it would be on the motorway :p

Oh I wouldn't be so sure!

Speed and grip doesn't always equate to a good handling car Benjo1989

People seem to mistakenly equate good handling with the ability to take any corner at 80mph.

In reality, handling is all about feel, balance, communication and 101 other intangible things including personal preference. Handling is all about how easy it is to drive a particular car at the limit whereas grip is all about where that limit lies. The two are completely different things.

Anyone remember when they 106 was voted the best handling car in the world ever... By a group of racing drivers, and jeremy clarkson :p

Ok, so we established that a mini would beat a v6 golf on a gokart track. But where do they stand when it comes to 0-60?
