V6 4 Motion Vs Mini?

Hey there

My friend is certain that his old Mini City would handle better than my parents Golf V6 4 motion. He also mentioned it would be faster off the lights and it would keep up with the Golf up to 60mph? :p

Just making sure i have a good reason to laugh at him?

At stock mini citys have 998cc engines (some have 850's...), so on a good day its going to have about 40hp - 45hp. No chance of beating it to 60, unless it had something tasty under the bonnet. As for handling? I read some reviews and the steering and handling of the golf is "dull and lacks feedback" so the mini has got it trumped there. It all depends how well he looks after it, the suspension is probably in a right state.

Ok, so we established that a mini would beat a v6 golf on a gokart track. But where do they stand when it comes to 0-60?

WTF? A go-kart track? Is that something to be impressed about? Stick it on any normal race track and the mini would be completely toast.

And 0-60mph it wouldn't stand a chance.

Who cares tbh? stick the golf on a track against a mini miglia and it would get wasted. Two totaly different cars for different sorts of people.

But that wasn't the question...?

He's comparing the Mini City to a Golf V6 4motion?

I'm just answering the OP's question ;)

I was just replying to the statement "Put it on a go-kart track and it'll win"... I mean come-on! Talk about scraping the barrel! :p

Perhaps not but would it handle better than a lardy Golf with dodgy Haldex? :p

Just a bump so i can find out why haldex is dodgy? and what experiences you have with this dodgy awd system.

Anyone remember when they 106 was voted the best handling car in the world ever... By a group of racing drivers, and jeremy clarkson :p

Nope the Ferrari 550M came first, 106 Gti second beating Ferarri 355, R33 Gtr, M3 Evo, Lotus Elise etc :D

I would put good money on the Golf beating the Mini around a normal track - come on, let's forget about Go-Kart tracks considering these are cars, not Go-Karts.

But yeah, when it comes down to it, what would you rather be driving - a Golf V6 4-motion or an old Mini? It's pretty obvious to me.

Becuase it's not true 4WD is it, it's FWD which can send power to the rear wheels when grip is lost, so it'll drive like an FWD car until you get into trouble.

depends what lump your mates mini has fitted could be a nice lil 1380 lump under the bonnet with 100+ bhp in which case your screwed :)

Yup, although it'd have to be a nice mini ;)

I dont think you've ever experienced haldex. It does do what you say but it doesnt wait for the front wheels to get in trouble and will engage as soon as they slip, before you know they are slipping normally. The latest version with pre-x doesnt even wait for slip it will pre engage as needed as it learns your driving style. It is a very good system that gives you the economy of a fwd car most of the time with the benefit of 4wd if grip is fading. Its lots of fun to drive when you get the hang of playing with it. Its used by loads of companies inc Ford, Volvo, Vag group and even used on the Bugatti Veyron.

Its a bit stupid canning it as crap when you don't know about it or have ever used it.

I think by 'old mini' he meant 'non-bmw' so all the nice ones are ruled out I'm afraid :p

Doubt that, that would rule out all the nice originals that have been re-engined with VTEC's and the bike powered ones ;).

Its such a common thing on here to do just that, and I think that Mr. Fox does it quite often tbh. People should have experience of these things before quoting utter dross about said car, equipment, etc.......... :)
