Hello,

My girlfriend wants an upright vacuum cleaner.

Being a typical woman she likes dyson cleaners, i am happy to oblige on this front.

Where i need advice is the models. I notice that each model appears to have an "all floors" and an "animal" model.

Am i right in thinking that the animal models are the best? If so, should i opt for one of them?

Thanks :)

Do you have a budget?

A dyson ball will set you back about £250. the model is DC 25.

If you want just a standard dyson then go for the DC33.

•Dyson DC33 Multifloor Upright
•Suitable for all types of flooring
•Quick draw wand with 5.2m hose extension
•Trigger release bin and onboard tools
•Hepa filtration
•14.5m full length with cable and hose
•2.3l bin capacity
•Washable filter

I vote miele as well. Prefer their construction and seem to hold up better to everyday use. Animal ones tend to just be fitted with the rotating brush heads.

Get a Miele. They're Dyson, but not run-of-the-mill.

She wants a Dyson. I am happy that Dyson cleaners are satisfactorily good, my parents have had one for the best part of 10 years now at a guess with no complaints. Miele cleaners also use bags dont they?

I may have myself mixed up here, but that DC24 model looks far far too small, and really lacking in power? On the famous highstreet electrical retailer's website i am viewing, there is a picture of a person carrying it, and its...tiny?

Just looking at the website, the DC25 appears to be the proper ball model? :)

Edit: Ahh, i see! :)

All of them appear to be fitted with rotating brush heads? Even my parents one from the 90's has that?

unsure but the bags cost me £3.50 for 5 off ebay every 6 months+. I don't buy into this bagless nonesense personally.

if you want a tacky asian built vacuum cleaner, go for a dyson. if you want a well made german engineered one which is designed to last 10 years+ then go for a miele.

Bagless is good and Dysons do last.

You sound like a vacuum cleaner snob. :p

Don't get a compact "wrap-away" Dyson.

We got one because it seemed easier, but in honesty it's just plain annoying to get out and use when you just want to get rid of some mud / debris on the floor. Talk about Krypton factor!

I find my Henry to be an absolute annoyance when it comes to doing carpets, uprights are far easier (unless there's some sort of carpet attachment for the Henry).

Whatever they've done, the Dyson marketing team have done a superb job in making people think there's something special about their products, such that they'll pay £250+ for a vacuum cleaner that's nothing better than one you can pick up for 60 sheets in a supermarket.

My Mam and Dad went down the Dyson route a few years back and the first one fell to pieces in two or three years of normal use, so they got another one. This one also fell apart and the wire came out of the main body (which is shocking and left it dangerous). Like a brainwashed automaton my Mam was going to go out for a third Dyson until I pointed out that she should vote with her feet as the previous ones were plasticky rubbish. She's picked up a different make for not much money, it's as well built as a Dyson and it still works fine. She could afford to replace it four or five times for the price of a single Dyson.

Of course she lacks the nouveau riche affectation of being able to say "oh ja I was just using the Dyson the other day".
