Ok, my friend just brought a Golf mk4 TDI (90bhp version), and although he paid a premium for it (over £6k) he is rather happy with it, so i guess that makes me happy to (its nice to see friends happy!).

He brought it from a Listers garage, and the reason for buying the car was looks, reliability/reputation and peace of mind. (not looking for performance as in speed, as his last car was a 106!)

So i guess for him, its a perfect car for him, as it does everything he wants, and i guess it is his idea of good value for money.

I asked a few questions about the car, its done 37k (or 47k cant remeber!), but dont even know if it has alloys! And i am guesssing the worst part is that is has no air con! I'm also going to guess it wont have things like traction control, trip computer and the likes.

To me its a wee bit overpriced for what it is, and not the best of deals, but thats what you get for a "premium" car!

So to sum it up, one persons value for money is completly different from another persons.

What are your views on real value for money that would make you happy when buying a car?

Bang for buck I don't think I'll match my current car. It was nearly new and has excellent capabilities.

I don't know, it depends what I'm looking for at the time. Good consumption? Pure performance? Bit of both?

I guess it depends on what you are looking for in a car. And also on your perception of a what is a good car.

Your friend obviously considers VW's as a superior make of car and was willing to pay a premium for it when he could have gotten a lot more car for less money. However VW's do hold their value quite well, its swings and roundabouts really.

As said before, it depends entirely on what you want from your car. We wanted a nice comfy motorway cruiser so the BMW5, with all the mod cons is deffo VFM in my eyes considering what they cost new at the time. Others would say it's not VFM as it's only the smaller 2.0 engine. It's all horses for courses really.

Best bang for buck was my Volvo 740GLE for £100 :D

Full leather (heated at the front) 2.3 litre 4 speed manual with OD. Lots of space, Power, no rust on the body at all, and apart from the odd niggly problem and two new front tyres, hasnt cost me anything really

90bhp? no extras and 40k on te clock !!! Sounds like he's paying for the badge. £6k can get him quite a nice car with all the bits secondhand if he looked harder.

Simple person, simple things.

Dont think everyone needs equiptment, only for gadgets freeks (like me!).

Would a person who doesnt know about computers go and build one? They would rather get a built one from a large retailer for piece of mind.

(you get my drift!)

But what you said is true, for someone in the know:)

I know the feeling, my mate has just bought a T plate Golf SE 1.6 for £5000 . I could have thought of so many nicer cars to get for the money. To make it even worse he has a petrol card, so he had no excuse for not buying something with a v6.
