A semi-famous person shares the same name as my daughter. My daughter has an instagram account with this name.

The celebrity has offered my daughter £250 to pass over the rights to this instagram account name.

Anybody have any views on whether this is a reasonable amount.

BTW not going to reveal name but as I mentioned this celebrity is not that well know or super famous.

Cheers,

Just say yes, it's £250 more than she had yesterday!

Or take the money and open the same account name but with 'official' in front! Double your money!

:D

It's only as valuable as much as someone is willing to pay and as much as it means to the person that's selling it.

You'll never know how much this other person is willing to pay (without knowing them personally, or their long term plans) so you can only base it on how valuable it is to your daughter.

Assuming it's not a scam (which I suppose it's got every possibility of being) go back to the person with a non negotiable offer or how much your daughter would want for it. Base it on how much she uses it, how much trouble it would be to sort out the confusion with her friends and followers and how much see "likes" the name she's got.

Again, only your daughter can tell you that.

EDIT: Also consider that if the sale falls through there's nothing stopping them buying "THERoyMi6" or "OFFICIALRoyMi6" etc. Both of which you should register straight away as boxman2000 says :)

well keep it...

I think you're referring to an account name rather than domain name. If they're very rich I'd ask for £500 but you risk losing it all... Selling an account is almost certainly against the ToS of Instagram by the way. Don't disclose the account name on here.

I would first explore whether she can open another account in a similar name which she likes.

Is the actual name super important to her? Used often? A pain to transfer the name to her followers/contacts?

Generally I would counter for a higher amount and settle in between.

Their first offer will be low balling you, hoping you will say yes as you wasn't expecting an offer. I'd ask for either £1k or £1.5k and accept between £750 and £1k depending on how far you'll want to push it.

No brainer either way, sure your daughter will appreciate the money for buying something for herself.

£250 for something you can simply reregister in another seems like a good offer, unless there is some super serious bond over the existing name.

I wouldn't demand more money myself, I think it's a pretty generous offer already.

£250 is pretty good for a silly Instagram name. I'd be tempted to ask more depending on the celebrity, but they might just outright refuse and you're out of £250.
