Valve Index 2 (codenamed Deckard) Standalone

Taking shape now is an OLED, DP + WiFi, battery in a puck, 2.5k per panel resolution headset. When I asked if the price would be under $2k they said "yes, you'll be surprised". I asked if can I divulge who is doing it and they said please don't. This info wasn't a rumour from a random etc it was a company employee quite high up. Edited to add it will be "small form factor" too, I'm sure they mentioned in the 200-300 gram range with the battery being in a puck.

I watched a vid the other day from someone commenting about the Valve Deckard and they were rumouring 2880x2880 OLED panels. That's quite specific and doesn't conform to anything out there currently, so that's interesting if true. I'd be very interested in those specs. My next headset is OLED or nothing. Local dimming is dog ****.

maybe yes, although that wasn't mentioned, only that they are "2.5K res".

there was no mention of that so I doubt it, it will have inside out tracking.

I'd love to say who but said I wouldn't after asking them can I talk about it and them saying 'don't', I've seen 1 or 2 others comment about who this relates to on a discord server and word will soon spread anyway, I don't think anyone really knows the full proposed specs though (or as much as I've given here afaik).

I've seen user reviews saying that the mOLED panels used in the Big Screen beyond 2 are a bit smeary, at least at 90hz. I noticed the PSVR2 panels were very smeary (and had horrible mura). I don't think OLED is always as good as its cracked up to be.

Sounds like a slightly better meta quest; not convinced it's the saviour of VR to drag the industry from the trash can it's in

It'd be nice to be proven wrong but if it is just a bump in general specs, I don't see it moving the needle in VR adoption. Kind of like where the Valve Index has ended up in the VR space.
 
it really seems like Valve are trying to do the halfway house, and get people into it for mobile gaming on headsets with a slow burn push to VR and MR.
unless Valve have a long term VR plan i dont see VR being the main focus, its part of the plan but it makes more sense to open it up to as many people as possible with steam games/librarys and honestly thats "flatscreen" or traditional gaming, steamdesk is a good indication of how that worked.

i'd be interested to know if it supports bluetooth, and how a mouse would work.
 
It's interesting there's a bunch of previously Meta exclusive games heading for Steam now. I think the Meta store policies are pushing developers to try to support more headsets outside of Meta's store, which has awful discoverability, and is mainly pushing Worlds content.

Steam Frame will be one of those headsets with wider support I think.

It would be nice to see a HL:Alyx successor released with this! Been getting the VR itch again, was looking at possibly a Quest 3 (or 3S) - but would wait for this if it's only a few months away.
