Hey all,

I have been looking at getting a VR headset and been monitoring the Reverb G2 and really liked what i have seen in YouTube videos. I would like to use VR for all types of VR games and also simulators.

I have some issues with the G2 mainly the tracking and the controllers. My room is often very bright with the sun coming in and i dont have a blind or curtains and from what i understand inside out tracking just doesnt work if the room is to bright or if its completely dark. The controllers themselves also using aa batteries has put me off as i know you need a certain voltage of aa batteries, even though you can get rechargeable ones of these batteries it still bothers me that they are using aa batteries.

So this brings me to the valve index which from what i understand has the best tracking due to the lighthouses, the controllers have full finger tracking and they dont use aa batteries in the controllers but i as i understand the resolution isnt as good as the G2 and also there is a fair bit of god rays? in the index lenses, again this is just from what i am reading.

So my question is if you could get the Reverb G2 or the Valve Index which do you think would be best suited to my needs?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

What games do you play?

If it's mainly sims then the G2 is by far the best.

As an all-rounder the Index is probably best, but the resolution isn't as good as the Index or Quest 2. Controller reliability seems to be an issue too.

If you aren't bothered about Facebook then the Quest 2 is far better value than an Index. You can get a Quest 2 for a third of the price of an Index, and even if you add on a link cable and a better headstrap it's still half the price.

I have an Index and a Quest 2 and I use the Index for seated games and for PC specific games as the FOV and refresh rate are so good.

I use the Quest 2 for more active roomscale games where you move around a lot, and for watching movies due to the high resolution screen and portability.

Thanks for the fast reply.

My main games would be Microsoft Flight Sim, il2, DCS World, Elite Dangerous and Assetto Corsa. As for VR games i would really like to try Bkyrim VR, Boneworks and Half life: Alyx.

Quest 2 is actually a good shout considering its price and the fact i have never had or even used VR i could be one of those people who end up getting motion sick very easily and then never use the headset again.

If you've never used it before, then quest 2 is surely a good starting point, if for no other reason than it's available now (unlike g2 really), and you can use it standalone too, play for 10 days, and just return it if you don't like it, or return it and get something better.

You can also use it wirelessly for pcvr (as well as cabled).

Given the sims, sounds like g2 could be the best bet, but maybe worth at least trying q2 as you can get one now.

I would wait to see what users on this forum think of the Reverb G2 before deciding either way.

One thing that might factor in your decision is that you might not get a Reverb G2 until after Christmas. But you could have the Index in a couple of weeks.

Index has better controllers, finger tracking, better haptics, capacitive touch, better tracking accuracy, higher refresh rate options, substantially better vertical FOV, better horizontal FOV and will be upgradable (whenever Valve updates the hardware).
G2 has better resolution, is lighter, cheaper, more convienant tracking solution.

If new to VR, I'd get a G2.
If you are not new to VR, I'd get an Index. Once you have experienced the Index controllers and the tracking, I think its a bit difficult to go back.

I have been running an Index for over a year now. Coming from a Oculus CV1 the Index was amazing, the build quality is superb, the best tracking in the industry and those controllers, oh those controllers are a true next gen item, way better than the rest. I game and sim (DCS iL2 iRacing etc) and the resolution is pretty good and plenty to try and get 144fps to match the higher refresh rate. The tracking is a godsend as is the FOV in sims and the controllers and the refresh rate is awesome for games like Alxy and boneworks (both superb games). Downside is cost (although you can see why its expensive) and the godrays are bad, but only in pitch black situations with bright white text to be honest and never an issue in game... You pays yer Money...

My shout would be to get the Cheapest Quest 2 and the Reverb G2.

Use the Reverb G2 for sit down Sim games like Microsoft Flight Sim, il2, DCS World, Elite Dangerous and Assetto Corsa

Then use the Quest 2 for all the stand up games like Skyrim, Boneworks, Alyx Etc. Wireless freedom just adds so much to these types of games.

For not much more than the price of the Index you have two headsets.

Also, since the G2 is still on Pre-order and the Quest 2 can be bought straight away, this solution would allow you to test the VR waters with the Quest 2. Then if you decide you want to keep swimming you keep the headset.

I'd rather use the G2 for Skyrim, Boneworks and Alyx than use the Quest2.
The Quest 2's visuals are going to be far behind the G2, the audio is also abysmal compared to the G2 and unlike the Index, it doesn't have a substantially better controller.

I'd rather just get a G2 and pocket the change than buy both headsets. Or spend £200 extra over getting a Q2 and get 2x base stations and 2x Index controllers and use the G2 with Index controllers.

I've ordered the G2, as clarity/resolution is more important to me than field of view. If the tracking is really bad I might get index controllers, but from what I've seen of reviews it will be good enough for my purposes.

All valid concerns and I went through the same thoughts.

I have a day 1 G2 preorder in and hope to get it end of this month. IF the tracking is as bad as Tom's Hardware review it will be goong back or getting sold (I am confident there are enough simmers out there who will be happy to jump the preorder queue that I will get my £560 back at least)

OTOH if it is as good as MRTV promises it will be a keeper for me for quite some time. Personally I don't want boxes on my wall any more and for £920 I would want the best visuals on the market.

The batteries are also a real downside. I refuse to use non rechargables on a device with such high drain. I am no tree hugger but that is plain irresponsible...... But I have bought 8x1.5v rechargables and a charger for iirc just over £30

I get the feeling this headset is a suck it and see device. There is too much conflicting info so I need to see for myself.

The quest 2s 90hz high Res streaming update has apparently transformed it.... I have a quest 2 as well and IF I send back the G2 this will be my daily driver for a while. I have not tried on pc as none of my usb cables are good enough and I don't want to buy one for it if I keep my G2.

FOV wise I am expecting a small bump over my old rift CV1 and current quest 2 but NOT expecting an index/Odyssey FOV

what do you mean its upgradeable?

Within the ecosystem, you can upgrade the headset or controllers separately whilst for oculus and wmr based systems, you normally buy an entirely new headset and controller package.

so I could if I wanted to go out and buy a Pimax 8kx if I wanted to.
