Valve working on linux possibly

Intriguing. My first thought was just that they run servers on Linux or something and that it would be nothing more interesting than that, but the email specifically mentions shader performance. That's gotta be gaming, right?

I've always said that if they can support Mac, it would be almost trivial to also support Linux. 95% of the work is already done.

Very interesting news, doesn't necessarily mean they will bring steam over to linux though ( I would love it if they do)

This tbh. I'm surprised they've not done it before now. I know lots of people that run Steam through Wine to play TF2.

Any OpenGL supporting game (e.g any of the Source titles) should be at least possible to port to some extent I'd have thought.

I can definitely see this having a market for the Linux user who wants to play the occasional bit of TF2.

We are a long way away from being able to game on Linux though, sadly.

I do hope they bring Steam to Linux though. I'd love to be able to use Steam (for it's chat) on my Linux box without Wine.

Yeah, to be fair gaming on Linux is much better now than it used to be if you're not bothered about the AAA games. It seems that indies support Linux way more often than not, now. The Humble Indie Bundles have proved time and time again that not only are Linux gamers willing to part with serious cash to play games, but the size of the Linux gaming market is comparable to the size of the Mac gaming market.

If Steam started supporting Linux, the already growing Linux gaming market would absolutely explode.

They've done Mac, and TBQH that's about 50- 60% of the primary work right there assuming they did their initial work with Linux in mind.
This was always going to happen, sooner or later.

This has been in the works for a long time. They announced a Linux version was being done at least 3 years ago when i first got a Linux Distro. Glad to see they're actually doing it!

It's amazing news and should have the knock-on effect of more developers having linux in mind when making their games.

Assuming developers don't make two different versions (DirectX for Windows, OpenGL for Linux) then this will lead to an increase in games using OpenGL.

If that turns out to be the case then I hope AMD improve their OpenGL support or we'll see the same situation we seen with Brink and Rage.

oh please this will be great and some clever bods will release a gaming optimised distro :-D

Make it a live distro and I would be in.

This is the thing which would help push Linux to the gaming masses. The Linux community just needs to get its **** together and not mess this opportunity up and take their head out of their ***.

Just imagine if HL3 simultaneously launched on Linux, **** ****.

The sales would be through the roof as the linux community have proven time and time again that you release a game on Linux, they will buy it with gusto in haste to prove the platform is worth developing for. Nevermind a AAA release such as HL3, they would be ejaculating till the next century.

This would be a MASSIVE boost for Linux game development though, especially for the indies.
