Guys,

I was speaking to a pal yesterday who reminded me how good this game was :)

I haven't played it for a while – I had a serious XP crash or something a few years back and I lost all my game saves etc. I remember I had only just got into the second city of the game, so I don’t think I had gotten very far?

Anyway, since there is hardly anything even remotely playable being released on the pc atm, I think it is time to revisit this title? What I want to know is is what’s the current situation with patches? I know there are official/unofficial ones out there but I want to know what you recommend.

I'll be playing it on Vista x64, hopefully at 1650*1080.

Cheers,

SW.

If you have 4Gb don't bother

There is an issue with textures being extra low res with anything over 2Gb installed

The UI is barely readable and the game just looks really ugly, only reason I didnt play it again on my Vista machine. But if thats not an issue for you, just get the latest official which is 1.2 then patch it to the latest unofficial which came out a couple of months back. 5.0 or something

I had it running with 4Gb no probs on Vista home Premium (albeit not x64 bit)...

I found no probs with the UI or it generally looking ugly - it was just as good as I remembered!

I had installed the official patches and then moved over to the unnoficial ones.

everyone should play V:TMBL - one of the best games ever made. I just wish more RPG games were made for adults with witty well written dialogue.

If only the devs had been given more time to sort the bugs on release this would be recognised, as it should be, as an all time classic.

make sure you give it a fair crack of the whip this time round now that the bugs are sorted.

Okay, I'm pretty sure I've got an original release of Vampire; where do I start with the patching? Which one/s official/unofficial do I need to download first?

Cheers,

SW.

So far I've got the official v1.2 patch and I'm downloading the unofficial v5.4 patch?

Is that going to be enough to give it a whirl ;)

SW.

a lot of people say that you should play it through with just the 1.2 official patch because it is representative of how the devs wanted the game to be played - I agree with the philiosophy but the 1.2 patch most certainly did not resolve all the bugs.

I think there is an unofficial patch that just aims to fix the bugs rather than add things to the game which is what the community patches seek to do to great effect by adding new abilities etc.

There's two main unofficial patch makers, and they flame each other constantly on every forum from gamefaqs to gamespy and beyond. Just play it with the official patch and be done with it, unless one or the other has managed to solve the 4GB RAM bug. If they haven't just take out 1 stick of RAM, it's not as if you'll be able to get away from Bloodlines to play any other games until you've finished it! :D

Played a large part of the game recently using the 'True VTMB patch version 4.04AT' when used in conjunction with the official 1.2 patch all bugs seemed to be addressed.

Absolutely love this game,re-installing at the moment after losing saves with the intention of finishing it this time!

Below is a section of the True VTMB patch' readme file, which should answer your querys.

True VTMB Patch
version 4.04AT

---------------------------------------
Overview:
---------------------------------------

This is a repair patch for "Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines," a wonderful RPG
created by the Troika studio and released in 2004 by ActiVision. This patch is intended
to do nothing but fix bugs that were still present within the game, following its release.
This patch will not change any other aspects of the original VTMB, other than to restore
any broken (but intended by Troika) content that the official patch from ActiVision failed
to repair.

It is the author's intention to change absolutely nothing about the way VTMB plays, aside
from repairing and restoring broken parts of the game's code. To the best of our knowledge,
nothing else has been altered from the way that Troika had originally intended for the game
to be experienced. In short: if you would prefer to play an unbroken version of the original
game, then this patch is definitely for you.

It is recommended that you not install this version on top of any other "unofficial
patches" or mods. Also, this version of the True VTMB Patch does not support any previous
versions of our patch (such as 4.03AT). This is a self-contained, stand-alone patch and
it must be installed into a fresh copy of VTMB. This is critical..!!! You can not just drop
version 4.04AT into a pre-existing installation of VTMB and expect it to function properly.
You absolutely MUST completely remove and then re-install VTMB, from its original
installation CD's. This point can not be stressed enough, so please be sure that you fully
understand this issue, before proceeding any further.

----------------------------------
INSTALLATION:
----------------------------------

FOR VERSION 4.04AT, YOU MUST BEGIN WITH A TOTALLY NEW AND FRESH INSTALLATION OF VTMB.
Any previous installations MUST be completely un-installed AND totally deleted from your
hard drive, BEFORE you can install version 4.04AT of this patch.

Once you have a fresh, new copy of VTMB installed, you MUST install the official v. 1.2
patch from ActiVision. This patch can be found in several places on the web, including
from ActiVisions own official site:

Once the official patch has been installed, please proceed to the next section...

Simply unpack this archive to a neutral, temporary folder on your hard drive. Then, copy
the entire "Vampire" directory within this archive into your main VTMB folder. Next, when
prompted and asked if you wish to overwrite any files, select "YES to ALL" and the patch
will thus be installed.

It is always wise to create a backup copy of the "plain vamilla" version of VTMB, before
patching or modifying it in any way. Once installed, this patch can not be removed without
re-installing the entire game, or overwriting it with a backed-up copy of the game's files.
The author(s) assume no responsibility nor liability for any failure to follow good backup
and installation procedures on your part. Please read and understand fully all instructions
and warnings before proceeding with this patch. This archive has been fully tested and all
of its files are known to be in good working order. It is offered free-of-charge and as-is.

Another recommendation for VTM: Bloodlines here, superb game - yes, you will just play in continuously until its completed, and probably end up doing a 2nd character straight after as you realise what to spend XP points on and what not to!

Might have to re-install and do a Malkavian, not tried one yet. Ventrue is tricky at times, but more "proper" vampire - not a good idea to start off as one though.

I haven't started playing it yet, but...

I've installed the (official) v1.2 patch and the (unoffical) v5.4 patch. I've also installed the widescreen patch to enable me to play at 1680*1050 ;)

Is the v4.04 patch the better option then?

How right you were...

Only just starting trying to replay last night and the textures/ui were awful :(

I was using the official v1.2 and the unofficial v5.4. I think I might start again and only install up to the v4.04 unofficial patch which will hopefully give me better visuals with 4GB.

Just played this for the first time today. Played the first one briefly and this one escaped me with it being released the same day as HL2.

A question. How do you progress to the Downtown area? I need to get to there to complete a couple of sidequests i picked up in the first zone. I've read a guide and it says use the sewers or a cab. How do you use the cab as the sewers aren't getting me anywhere :(

Assuming you have unlocked the the Downtown area, simply go to the drivers side of the cab and talk to the driver.

IIRC, you have to fully complete your current area, before you can move on to the next.

LEGEND STATUS game

thought it had a pretty good ending.

Smiling Jack - absolute class dude :D

Would have loved to see a sequel RIP Troika :(

Ye I thought so. After talking to a friend I assumed once you leave the side quests from one zone they might be gone forever but you must be able to travel back and forth in the cab to carry on doing them. Going to complete the main quest plot and then once Downtown is opened, I'll get back to the side quests
