Variable Speed limit Cameras

Well yeah, wasn't thinking of it in that sense, completely forgot that you can take an average speed of much lower but still blitz past one or two cameras. I tend to drive at the posted limit, so haven't had any naughty letters.

I enjoyed the M6 the other day, reading the 'this camera is not in use' sign on every one of the average speed cameras in a 50mph roadworks section...as there were only cones on the side of the road (ie verges) and minimal traffic, cruised through at 70. :p

Seems the ones I'm thinking of are active all the time although only after 5 minutes of the limit changing.

I am not sure about that as it contradicts everything else I have heard, however Steve Warren who runs that site is very knowledgable on the subject, I once spent a morning with him armed with a laser gun testing some errr "garage door technology" :p

Also, why have the traffic wombles decided that lane 1 needs to be closed so they can use it as a car park every time a truck needs a new tire? They're a public menace.

Whilst I agree that generally they are indeed wombles, with regard to HGV's & tyres, the lane closure is to protect the tyre fitter - working on an off side tyre - from that menace known as the public in vehicles.

I caused a similar closure after a O/S/F blowout recently on the A50.... :o

Why they insist on closing lane 1 when the truck has a puncture on its near side fails me completely though.

The M25 variable limit cameras are not specs cameras. They are all Gatsos. They can be swapped from gantry to gantry meaning half of them are dummys, it's just anyones guess which ones at that particular point in time. They are in place between J10 (A3 turn off) and J16 (M40) in both directions.

Speed cameras no longer are required to be visible, as I understand it that scheme was scrapped a little while ago. Many of the M25 ones are now built into the back of the gantry where as before they were always mounted on top so were visible when you approached them.

They are operated by a control room so are quite often left on in error when there is no traffic at all. I've come round the M25 at stupid o clock in the morning to be greeted with variable limits in action.

I'm actually about to do my next stint from Gatwick up to High Wycombe in the next half an hour so place your bets for how many different limits there are in that stretch. :D

I hate the ones they have on the M62/M1 before you get onto the A1(M).

They're always saying 40 / slow down - pedestrians in road... yet there's never anything there. Ever.

Do expand :D

thought I had covered it, the items in question do work, I have tested one with a laser gun

the legal issues off perverting the course of justice or obstructing a police officer have not been persued by the authoriies to any extent probably due to fear of losing a test case

oh and no I do not own one currently :)

I thought with the jammers they took your number plate er number and if they get an error again they would come check your car out? Or was that just a rumour? and wouldnt work with standard Gatso's I guess, but with speed trap vans it would.

There were attempts to prosecute

The first was along the lines of perverting the course of justice

Went along the lines of

"he had a jammer which stopped us prosecuting after an offence was comnitted"

"what offence"

"speeding"

"can you prove someone was speeding"

"errrrrrr....................."

they then tried "obstructing a police officer"

this went

"he obstructed a police officer ( camera van ) in the course of his duty"

"can you give the name and number of the police officer"

" er it was a civilian operator"

"oh so obstructing a civilian in the course of his duty"

Thank you and goodnight :p

from then on I belive there have been a very small number of voluntary confiscations and warnings but thats about it

Forgive me for being a bit thick, but what legitimate use for a laser jammer is there? And you mention garage doors.. something to do with opening and closing them presumably, but I'm slightly lost!

laser operated garage door openers also accidentaly jam laser guns ;)

Why they insist on closing lane 1 when the truck has a puncture on its near side fails me completely though.

So vehicles in the slow land don't have to straddle the fast lane. It also reduces the need for people to break aswell.

These precautions are necessary because there are bad drivers out there.

PS. As for variable cameras, I got done a few years ago doing 114mph during the early hours of the morning when I was the only one on the road.
Got 6 points and a £750 fine.

Ah, I see :)

Presumably the only problem being that unless your garage-opener is broken, it'll only try to open your garage door when you press the button - not all the time?

Don't they have public transport down south

LOL! :D :D

Public transport? When I have a perfectly good car?! Hell no! :D

I use the M25 a lot (for my sins) but haven't had that issue happen (someone braking in front of me), though I do slow down gently if I see the signs just in case, but it is annoying that the highway monitoring people forget to reset the signs.

It's actually quite stressful driving with average cameras as you're constantly looking at the speedo to make sure you're not going too quickly, and not everyone has cruise control.

There is a similar stretch on the M4 going past Cardiff. Was so dangerous in my old car having to constantly watch my speed. My new car has speedtronic though, so I can see a maximum speed :D. Very useful!
