Wow, I have to say I'm impressed with the latest version of vB. Up until now I've been running SMF and have been 100% happy with it, but I would love to increase the 'community' aspect of my site, and the new vB offers many features which do just that.

Basically it's ripping-off myspace (and of course wordpress), and 3.7 is some kind of hybrid between a forum, a blogging tool and a profile site.

Of course I can understand how many people, especially around these parts, will turn their noses up at this. But for certain boards like my own I think it will work perfectly and is just what the end-users want.

I'm almost certainly going to be upgrading to vB very soon and can't wait to get working on all the new aspects in a live environment. :cool:

Ugh. Can't say I like this idea. At least it's highly unlikely these features will be enabled here on OcUK.

I'm just about to buy Vbulletin so was thinking that if I got 3.6.8 I could upgrade when the 3.7 final is out.
 
Yeah I think that is what I will be doing too. Although 3.7 is the last release of '3' series, so I am more concerned about being able to upgrade to the new vB4 series when it is released. But like I said, if you have a proper license I don't see why it would be an issue.
 
I don't think they will be releasing 4.0 for quite a while. That news item for 3.7 was from Nov 2007, and that was to announce beta release. The final still hasn't made it. So I guess this is the final, 3.7 ... and 4.0 would be at least 6 months away after going through betas and release candidates.

I think I'm gonna get 3.6.8 later this evening... there's a years worth of 3.xx upgrades .. so that's cool
 
it will be a fresh install on a new domain.

We are also having VBSEO on it :) which in my mind is £80 well spent.

I run Zoints SEO on a different vb forum and it works really well. I'm not 100% convinced that's why i'm shelling out for VBSEO on this one.
 
Slightly off-topic here, but how do you create categories on vB? I can only see an option for creating forums.

ACP -> Forums & Moderators = Options for adding forums. I don's see any way to add categories. :confused:
 
A category is a forum with no posts in it as far as vb is concerned. You just add a forum and then change "Act as Forum" to no which makes it a category.
 
Yeah I realised that after posting. It's got one of those pain-in-the-arse systems where you have to make forums pretend that they are categories. phpBB has started doing this since version 3 too. :/

I much prefer the SMF way of distinguishing between forums and categories. ie the admin panel gives you two seperate options, one for creating categories, and then an option for creating forums within the category. Of course either way doesn't make a whole lot of difference it's just that it seems to make more sense to me when the two things are kept entirely seperate.

Id imagine its to allow you to use the same permissions that you have with forums with categories, most of the major players do it like that.
