VED for Roads again?

Good news that more is being spent on the roads, but this money hasn't come from nothing and we'll end up paying for it in cuts or tax rises elsewhere I'm sure.

It's good that money will be invested into improving the roads, in Oxfordshire there are areas that are in a terrible condition.

However as good as it is it needs to be spent wisely, contractors will see this as their bonus rather than it meaning they have to do more work and councils will see it much the same way. I don't get why the government have their own workforce to work on the roads and run it like a business, which is an idea a lot of government bodies could adopt, as an example the transition of schools going to academies where a headteacher who has little to no business sense is given a budget to run a school, whilst there are governors who have ultimate control over things, they also have little to no business sense.

Very often and certainly least in Oxfordshire roadworks overrun from say 10 weeks to 30, and because of this the cost of it will be x10 - the contractor quoted x amount that is what should be paid, not a crazy increase. Obviously certain factors can impact on cost/overrunning, but poorly quoting the work isn't one of them.

Anyway, that's my rant of the day over!

I haven't. I've ignored the announcement from that media outlet as it's written by an obvious fool.

He is using a term that many understand even though it is incorrect "The news that all Vehicle Excise Duty, or road tax, will be spent " hence the use of lower case as a descriptor rather than a noun.

Highways England aren't even responsible for the local council roads that are suffering the most. Local government budgets have been squeezed because they've lost billions (£15.7bn lost 2010 through to 2020) in central government funding. They better get some of that money so they can afford to fix the potholes instead of having to decide between potholes or adult social care.

The current government is basically trying to solve a problem they created through austerity.

Unfortunately, the general public cant use the English language at all correctly. So it doesn't matter what he did or didn't do. The fact its even there shows he's a writer who doesn't know his audience

Absolutely, 100% agree.

Hopefully this doesn't mean "smart motorways" all over the place. You can't drive 10 miles on the M25 without them changing the speed limit 37 times, which sometimes it's for a valid reason, but often it's just because they can.

keeps it flowing though, better than doing 70mph into stationary traffic

Have you any idea how you are coming across in this thread :D
I don't really care in all honesty.

Allowing people to coin the term "road tax" is the basis of stupidity.

It allows people to say things such as: "get that cyclist of the road, they don't pay any road tax, why should they be allowed on the road!!!"

Oh wait, road tax doesn't blooming exist!

They need to stop resurfacing them using crap quality tarmac for a start. It just falls to bits again a year later. Around here they keep using some stuff which is rough AF and they seem incapable of making it level.

But yea...it's always been road tax really. You don't pay the tax if you don't use the car on the public road :P

It's now clear where your self-entitled attitude comes from.
