Vehicle traded in - prospective buyer has contacted us

I had a new owner of my Octavia contact me about 7 years after I auctioned it asking if I had it remapped. I told them I'd had a stage 1 revo and they replied back "oh, so you didn't put the anti-lag and two-step map on it then" Poor thing! I knew it had been Barry'd as I'd seen it on the road a few times but I didn't know to what extent.

They'd managed to track me down via Facebook somehow

Could be from a number of sources, i've got the details of the previous owners of all 3 of my cars because there are reciepts & service histories that came with the cars which were tucked inside the wallets that came with them, the last 2 I bought had all that in the glovebox whilst sat on the forecourt.

I wouldn't have any issue with a new owner contacting me though.

I had a similar thing on an Ibiza I sold. Probably an old mot doc or receipt you overlooked. Nothing nefarious. And it isn't unreasonable for the new buyer to chance a bit of guidance.

We’re not going to reply to the guy at all. It’s not even the dealer we traded it to that is selling it.

Log book 100% didn’t have our details in it. I do realise now we did make a mistake that the dealer should not have taken the full v5, wasn’t really thinking about too too much.

I’ve reached out to the sales guy with a politely worded “wtf mate”.
had the same with daughters old car she traded in and told the garage all the faults they gave her a decent part ex price, week later she gets a call from the new owner who bought the car from a totally different garage. can only assume the garage sold it trade to another dealer/part time trader who sold it on.
like you she was miffed as had removed all paperwork etc with her details on.
when she contacted the garage about it they passed it of as she must have left a reciept in the car balloney.

i told her that if the people rang again to tell them all the faults etc and not gloss over any :)

indeed i would not be surprised about facebook... like so many she lives her life on it ......

Just reply with a yes / no and move on. I doubt this is some scam or extravagant con, they're almost certainly just asking for information so they know if they need to change the cambelt.

Unless you know for certain that the dealer has inappropriately shared your information, it seems more likely it's on some paperwork left with the car or something.

I always keep invoices etc and keep those with the car. My details are probably on some of the paperwork.

The car was empty and it was only a replacement log book with no details as we’d lost the original.

It don’t think this was intentional by the dealer, but her name and address have been shared somehow, my guess being the v5, given the dealers gave us a huge speech about data privacy (including a print out of their cookie policy lol) I’d expect them to perhaps apply it.

With the V5, aren't you only meant to give them the tiny slip and you keep/destroy the rest?

Report yourself to the ICO immediately.

In that case the V5 was probably just thrown in with the cars other paperwork slight oversight much like you handing it over in the first place.
Yeah but what about the conspiracy theory and trying to ruin the dealers reputation?

If the dealer slipped your details without permission, even by accident it's a data protection breach which they could be fined for. I wonder how many actually go through the car's paperwork to remove names and addresses. Probably none. Same if you sell a car on which has paperwork with a previous owner's details on it.

not
I wonder how many people forget to delete everything before they sell a car...
Not only did both my new cars have the old owners accounts on and the sat nav history..... my IPace would not let me register the car as it said I was not the owner and I needed to take to Jag main dealer to reset. (was a big garage that sold it me but not a main dealer)

I get private sales doing this but garages should as matter of course reset.

that said the owner of the car should also consider this before trading in.

as for the person contacting you. I am soft I guess but if itp were me i would probably give the info esp if the car is either a really good buy or an especially poor one.

Might as well help them seeing as they've tracked you down, regardless of whether there's been a data protection breach. It's no skin off your nose :D . Buying a used car is a minefield so I'd provide the info, personally, even if it's just the selling dealer asking.

I once did the same when I had issues with my very first used car I bought. Turned out the previous owner traded it in on 145k miles, I bought it on 96k miles, so, the dealer had clocked it. This was years ago where name and address was shown with the previous owner details I think. Found tel no for the person and address in the phone directory and called them out of the blue.

The previous owner of my Polestar had left his Google account signed in, which included the maps. I got in the car on the Saturday morning and wondered why my previous destinations from the night before were all pubs in Belfast…

Mind you, probably not half as confused as he was wondering why his phone’s previous destination was a military airbase in Lincolnshire…

What tinfoil hat answer are you suggesting? The garage decided to forward on the deets?
no tin foil but as me and the wife had to clean the car and sort the paperwork i guess im implying they did pass the details on. dont really understand if you have a problem with that ?

Well you're suggesting they went out of their way to connect the previous owner, which seems highly unlikely.

ok its christmas so i think maybe we are at cross purposes, she sell the car to garage a/ and buys another vehicle off them. she has to give them her details.
they then sell the vehicle to another trader lets call him b/. and no doubt pass the document on to them, .
trader b/ sells vehicle on to customer, who then decides he wants some history about the vehicle, no doubt due to excessive smoking from engine etc (which garage a/ knew about when traded in).
if we removed all paperwork with her details on and wiped sat nav etc, the only way her details got to final customer was if garage a/ or trader b/ passed them on.
if it was my car i would not be bothered but shes on her own with 2 disabled kids so was taken aback by the phone call.
i personally cant see any other way it happened but to be honest it was about 3 months ago so really gone past careing geez.
