VelociRaptor clicking?

I've had an 80GB IDE Maxtor clicking for the past 2 years, still going strong..

I'd create backups just in case. So then at least your covered for the worst possible outcome.

Clicking is getting louder, system is getting slower, looks like it's really on its way out.

Going to buy a new hard drive but I have a question.

Using Windows' imaging tool, can I create a system image on the 1TB drive (which has data stored on it and is inside the case) and use Windows installation CD to restore that image onto the new hard drive (replacing the VelociRaptor)? I'm guessing it'll work and I don't have a reliable external storage solution at the moment.

Or is there a better alternative I should use, such as Acronis True Image?

Never used Windows imaging tool, so can't comment. Though I seem to remember there are limitations when backing up and restoring where your from / to drives are a different capacity (unless this has changed recently).

I've always used Acronis TI and never had a problem with it. There are trial versions available if you don't want to purchase it for long term use. I believe you can even pick up a copy from Western Digitals WEB site.

Out of interest. What do you actually mean by "system is getting slower". Surely you have your OS installed on your SSD? or are you just talking about when you try and access the Vraptor!?

Nah, SSD's in my laptop, I should change my sig to reflect that.

I have Windows 7 installed on the VelociRaptor, system is noticeably slower when I access folders with huge amount of files in them, scrolling through stuff in Windows Media Player (these slowdowns happened when the drive started to click) and as I mentioned before, defragmenting takes forever (Used to take few minutes to complete, now it's 20+ mins.)

Considered about Acronis True Image, I'm gonna give that a try, thanks.

Right ... I'm with you.

Just a bit of a disappointment that WD's Diagnostic tool doesn't seem to show anything. Always easier if you can actually see a fault (if you get what I mean). Though it determinately sounds like some things up. Not too sure how you will / would get on with an RMA on this drive though (if you want to go down that route of course).

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
