Velociraptor II?

I'd be surprised if they bothered with a II, that market share is firmly in the sights of SSD tech. They may do it anyway as a marketing ploy but a similar priced/capacity SSD later in the year will wipe the floor with it.
 
Yeah, I can't see another mechanical drive personally. It's a problem for WD though - AFAIK they have no SSDs on the market right now, so they're going to have to do a fair bit of work to get a new SSD Raptor to market, and it will be very expensive.
 
Maybe that's what they are working on, behind the scenes as with ssd's their market is disappearing at the top end.

I'm just trying to work out how long to stick with my existing discs in desktop and laptop, perhaps for a change I wait about a year and see how things develop (and also trying to get to 250 posts in a good way!)
 
Considering the Velociraptor has just been released, I doubt that a totally new version would be on the horizon soon. Like has been said, SSD are the next big thing.
 
You can bet WD R&D have SSD drives on the bench. They have built up a name for fast OS drives and they'll be keen to cash in on that. WD will be careful though, what they release needs to work - if they release anything with bugs or other issues that reputation will be toast. They'll call it XRaptor or some damn thing :D
 
still prefer a velociraptor or any raptor over an ssd since ssd's based on MLC are gonna hit a hard limit at 10k writes and with the number of writes i perform on hard drives id hit that limit in 1 year easy in my server.

now in my laptop a slc based drive could last a bit i rekon. but the price is too much again.
 
SSD has so many advantages over mechanical drives that there is no going back I think.

A motor will NEVER become more silent than SSD (0 db)

A motor will NEVER become as fast as an SSD (.1 ms)

A motor will NEVER survive a drop unlike an SSD (Very Very High chance rated at 1500G)

Not high really, just some premium for having the latest and gratest tech. Isn't the same always be it GPUs CPUs or whatever "new"?


Out of curiosity what is it you run that will hit 10k writes (uniformly distributed across the cells)?

If you are running an SQL or something that writes more than it reads by definition then home based products are not supposed nor are designed to satisfy your requirements.

where rhumers about a year ago of 20K RPM raptor's, but nothing else heard as yet, so could be developed or just online rhumers
