I as looking for an alternative to Acronis recently and I came across this a lot, if you make a sector-by-sector backup then fine but not for a regular one. I think the Acronis software is pretty flakey and the Linux restore disc was a terrible idea as it has poor compatibility. Nonetheless, I've always been able to work around to resolve any issues with Acronis. Not had bad backups, lost data, failed to restore etc; and it's quicker than others.

RE Acronis... I suppose that no software is perfect. But like yourself, I have on the whole found True Image to be a half decent program.

I rather like being able to mount the .tib image as a drive. Handy to pull data off if you are having to re-build / install everything from scratch.

Though got to admit that I've never had cause to use the rescue disk. So can't comment on that.
