Velociraptor wthout Icepack

Hi again all. I got all my parts from OCUK today (at 8.30am!)

In this I ordered an OEM Velociraptor (model no WD3000BLFS)

However it has come without the Icepack. I assume this is inentional as theres no room in the box.

Anyway does this even need the icepack? Or is there a better 3rd party alternative I should use this opportunity to get? I'm putting it into an Antec 900-2 case as the boot drive (non-RAID).

Yep, you are correct, the BLFS comes with no icepack. But these drives get hot and the icepack is a good idea. Bear in mind it will also be difficult to mount as the icepack turns it from a 2.5'' to a 3.5'' drive.

Can you buy the Icepack separatly?

Or would something like a novibes 2.5 offer enough cooling.

Anyone used an alternative to the Icepack?

You should have bought the WD3000HLFS or WD3000GLFS, they come mounted in the Icepack. Removing the Icepack from these voids the warranty. I have the HLFS.

You can always return it via the Distance Selling Regulations, but you have to pay all the postage costs (And send the drive RMSD for the insurance!)

What about if I mount it behind the top 120mm fan in the Antec, using a NoVibes 2.5 to secure it. Sounds like a plan?????

Sounds good to me, probably quieter like that than with the icepack anyway

The ones without the Icepack are 2.5" drives and some people want or need that configuration.

The icepack is rubbish, it just makes the drive more noisy and the drive uses so little power that it doesn't need extra cooling anyway.
