versatile home server

Sorry yes hex core, I meant not sure if I should stretch to the 8 core, another 8GB of ram would probably be of more benefit.

Everything was put on this week only today, maybe it's a sign.

If you're happy with just one server and just want to play around with virtualisation then why not use virtualbox or VMware workstation?
My home server is running WS2012 Essentials with 120GB SSD for the OS, 3TB WD Red for data, 3TB WD green for backup and a 60GB SSD for my VDI VM. I use the VDI VM, running on VMware Workstation when I'm on client site as it can be accessed via the TS Gateway built-in to WS Essentials and it's the only permanent VM on my server. Others get created and blown away without effecting anything else.

Edit: Forgot to say it's all running on a FX-8320 with 16GB RAM
