Hello chaps,

I believe my Vertex 2 has kicked the bucket and I am after some advice.

So my PC froze last night, could not do a thing except move the mouse cursor. Rebooted, was fine. Today it started happening more often and would eventually blue screen if left long enough.

Long story short, the Vertex 2 has its red and green lights on, I did some research and this pretty much means the drive is knackered. I had not updated the firmware at all since I had it so I did so just now (going from 1.32 to 1.35) using tools and guides on OCZ's support forums. That didn't fix it.

There's another option to "Secure Erase" the drive but looking at everyone else's posts with this problem I have a feeling it will either fix it temporarily or not at all. I'm not even sure I want to RMA it because I'll get one back that'll do the same thing. Should I just look at buying a new one from a different manufacturer?

Timing couldn't be worse because Diablo 3 goes live soon, and I had the week off to play it. I have a spare 250GB drive I could install Windows on... desperate times call for desperate measures, as they say :D

considering how cheap the 128gb crucial m4's are atm id grab one of those, rma your ocz for a replacement and sell it sealed

it will work fine on sata2 ports,if you upgrade then it will run in sata3 provided your mb supports it ect

Did the drive report firmware accepted when you used the OCZ tools ? That's odd.
If it was knackered, I didn't think it would work at all.
Secure erase is no big deal. It does what it says on the tin. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose at this point.

The firmware was accepted.

The drive will function for about 3-5 minutes after which the red light will come on and it will cease to function.

I have tried Secure Erase and also resetting CMOS. The light still goes red after a few minutes. I cannot install Windows to it. I'm just going to do what wazza said and order a new one today and sell the RMA'd drive.

Mine also died last night. PC locked up while gaming and had to do a hard reset. PC locked up on the post screen for 3 minutes or so before saying select proper boot device. Got into the bios and no Vertex 2E detected. Changed cable, same result. Changed sata port on the mobo, same result. Tried in my other halfs pc. Same result. Not happy at all. It's only 13 months old and had been working fine. Applied for a RMA direct with OCZ but whatever they send me as a replacement is getting sold. Not going to use their poor drives anymore. Their forums are full of Vertex 2's failing.
