Vertex 2 Firmware failure

Hi,

I've got a Vertex 2 SSD 256gb and when i try to update the fimware it fails.

Its says downloading firmware

Then downloading 64 sectors

then downloading 928 sectors then immediately fails.

I'm booting from a different volume so it's hooked up as a secondary drive.
Any ideas what it might be?

looking online, is it because i dont have ahci mode on?

Will my normal sata drive boot if i have ahci on?
