vertex buffer error with 3D mark 06 ? ?

Hi all,
I have just ran 3DMARK 06 as my new pc hasnt been tested under load as yet, and i thought i would give it a try.

When its running, it gets through the "return from proxycon" part of the test fine, then it starts the next part (little lights moving thru a forrest).
After about 5 seconds of this 2nd test, 3dmark 06 stops and an error comes up. The precise error is, , , ,

Idirect3D vertexbuffer9: : lockfailed:n/2(unknown)

The first time i ran 3dmark06 and this error appeared, i just closed it down and rebooted. After a while, i went back and ran the test again.
It stopped in exactly the same place as previously and i got the same vertexbuffer/lockfailed error message. Only this time, , i started getting hundreds of little dots all over the screen, after a few seconds, there was hundreds more.
I quickly closed down 3dmark06 but even after it closed, the little dots were still getting worse.
I ended up cutting the power to the pc straight away as i was getting very concerned.
What is going on ? Any ideas ? ?

I have Q6600,, 4GB PC2 8500 GEIL RAM, and a BFG OC Geforce 8800gts.

On my older system with only 2gb ram and a D 945 3.4ghz cpu and the same graphics card, i never had this problem with 3dmark at all, , it always ran thru to the end.
I expected with twice as much ram, x64vista and a Q6600 that i would get an even better score than my old system.
I know its not a gamers machine (and its not ), and i wasnt running it for the score, , i was only running it to see what my temps and system stability were like under some form of load as it hasnt ran under any load since i built it.

Would really appreciate some advice please, , never come across this sort of error before.
PS: I only built the pc 10 days ago and because its x64 bit vista, i ensured that i had all the latest drivers for x64 bit operation.
As far as i know, i have all the latest drivers for my system, , although i am open to suggestions !

Many thanks, kev

I have never touched the core frequency on this card, , its completly stock from BFG.
I wouldnt know how to do it anyway ? ?

Why would 3Dmark 06 run perfectly well without errors on my old slower system with the same card, , and cause this error on a better, faster pc using the same graphics card ? ? ?

Have just ran it again and got a different error this time, , at exactly the same point as well. . . .

Idirect3d device9 present failed device lost

Reinstall 3Dmark06, reinstall directX and hope its a software problem.
If you're unlucky the video memory could be bad, test it with Video Memory Stress Tester 1.7, it takes a few hours.
EDIT: Make sure its not overheating by touching it.

I have reinstalled 3dmark06 and the problem persists.
Its only on cpu test 2 (firefly forest) that it fails and the errors start popping up.
I have just ran it again, and this time opted not to run firefly foreset, and it went thru to the end without errors ? ?

However, , i cant see any directx9 in my add/remove programs section, , so i have tried to download the latest directx9 drivers and thats where the problem is becoming a little more apparent.
Whenever i try to download the DXWEBSETUP.EXE file(directx9) from microsoft, , it trys to download but when i click on run, it errors up saying "cant install at this time, , try later or check your network connections".
I have tried to download the file from a few 3rd party sites and it installs in like 100th of a second , , far too fast to be true, so i dont think i have directx9 on my system at all, which is why the pcmark06 isnt running correctly and why its forcing the graphics device to lock.

I am running vista x64, , could this be a possible bug with the OS ? ?

Also, my 8600gts is directx 10 compatible, , is that something to do with it ? ? i dont know anything about graphics cards to be honest, , but i know theres nothing wrong with mine. It ran pcmark 05 till the end with no errors scoring 9000 , , and i have just watched an entire dvd without a single frame skip or freeze ? ?

Just ran memory stress tester (only took 6 minutes ? ), and it came back all clear with no errors.

Download ATITool and try stress testing the card. When I was o'clocking mine, if I had pushed it too much, that same point in 3DMark 06 would fail.

Will an ATI tool work, testing an NVIDEA card ? ? ?
And dont forget, this is a stock card, i havent touched it at all overclocking wise ? ?
I have just ran a memory stress test that came back all fine with no errors !

Yes, as you can see from my sig., I currently have an 8800GT.

Run the "Scan for Artifacts" test and see if there are any problems. It's not unknown for cards to be faulty at stock speeds.

Have just ran ATITOOL and did the scan for artifacts.
It was still running after 35 minutes, but i didnt catch it when it ended as i was talking to somone on the phone and forgot about it , , it didnt produce any errors in the time i was watching it though.
My cpu temp rose from 38c to 41c whilst running the scan, which is the highest i have ever seen it so am pleased with that.
If anything, the scan showed me that the cpu is handling load quite well if cpu temp only rose by 3c.

Am going to run it again and see if i can see it thru this time as it didnt leave a log last time.
Will post back when its finished.

Right, , ran atitool a 2nd time and on this occassion, it bugged out at 57 minutes. There was no faults or errors up until the 57 minute mark, then am error came up that device locked, or failed or something like i had with 3dmark 06 last night.
The monitor screen then started an artifact show, , hundreds of little dots everywhere.
My cpu temp was up to 43c this time on full load, , mind you, i have the central heating on full this time.

Any ideas from the scan result ? ?

Well i ended up with a BSOD last night after all the fannying around with stress tests etc, , , As i bought the BFG 8600GTS at pc world, , i took it back and complained that it was bugging out at any type of load so must be faulty, , , ,Guy didnt seem to fussed and let me loose to pick another card to exchange it for, ! !

Not much cjoice in pc world at all to be honest, , i ended up getting an ATI SAPHIRE HD4850 (512MB) as it was the only half decent card on the shelf.

I do hope i have made the right choice as i was quite happy with my 8600GTS until i started running pcmark06 and ati toll scans.

Is the HD4850 any good, , compared to the 8600gts that is ? ? ?
