Vertex stuttering? Or something else?

Hey mates,
I have some issues. Last night I loaded GTA IV up to play and everything loaded as normal except I had to update win Live and restart my pc. After that I loaded the game and everything loaded as fast as normal. But I noticed right off the bat there was a really bad stuttering in the gameplay. What was more odd is that it did not matter if I was in a room by myself in the game or in some really intense high speed chase. Unfortunately I let my friend borrow my other games and I didn't have a way to try anything else. However, I used my old hd to boot from which is what I was using before my vertex that I got a couple of weeks ago and it ran the game flawlessly. That can only lead me to believe that somehow my Vertex is causing this. Does that sound possible?

I tried to re-install nvidia drivers, and got an error saying that couldn't use 32bit installer on 64 bit system or something to that effect. It was (binary type I386). So after googling no solution to that problem other than doing a clean install, I proceed with what I think will be the most straight forward and easy approach.

To be sure, I did a clean install of vista64 on my Vertex. I let Vista do the align as opposed to doing it manually like last time because I was told that it will auto align with vista. I managed to save all of the driver install files in my old hd and plan on using those.

This just doesn't sound right and I hope is not a problem with the vertex. I have never used the trim program, or defragged since I got it but that has only been 2 weeks like I said. Also other programs such as office 07, Word, Media center and player all loaded just as fast as normal.

Last night I uninstalled the nvidia drivers, and gta iv. Re-installed nvidia drivers (latest from website which were newer than ones in my old hd) and installed gta iv. I skipped the live part incase the last update had something to do with it. The nvidia drivers loaded with no prob. Installed the latest patch for the game, but now then the game wouldn't even start and would take years to load. Kept getting fatal error right when the game should have loaded.

Long winded I know and I apologize. I have tried googling my problem and can't find any solution or reason as to why or what could have caused this. The only new hardware recently installed was the vertex. The game ran fine off of my old hd so that is why I think it could be, but I hope it's not, my vertex.

Have any of you vertex owners experienced anything like this before?

Thanks for any help in advance.

btw- I only had time to load vista before work this morning. I don't know if the problem is gone yet and will update when I get home and load all other drivers/games/etc.

I hate to reply to my own post but I didn't want to make it any longer than it already was.

The more I think about it, it couldn't have anything to do with trim or the way files are written to the ssd, because read speeds are not effected. Does that make any sense?

Update: Installed all drivers and now moving to the game install. Old drivers from old hd installed this time with no error messages.

Have you tried running the new trim program off of OCZ's cite? It will work on single drive 64x systems so you should be fine. I'm curious if that helps at all. I would try that, and I wish I would have, before re-installing everything.

btw- I used 64 offset first time, this time let vista choose as the OCZ forums said alignment is not necessary with Vista or win 7.

Also do you have this problem with other games? I'm getting my farcry 2 back tonight and will try that if nothing else.

Ok, I almost got the game loaded until I got the infamous "seculauncher: failed to start application [2000]" error. I have the fix for that but I didn't have time to do it on my lunch break. I was already 30mins late:D

So far so good though and I read up that there is no need to align the drives on Vista or win 7.

Hi Ninja, sorry but I can't be of much help here I think cause I've not had any issues like this myself and it seems like you are doing all the right things anyway. The only difference that I can see is that both you and iCe-BLaZeD are running single drives whereas I have mine in an array... maybe I am suffering but it's just not so apparent due to the higher speeds of the RAID 0 - I don't know tbh. I'm gonna keep an interested eye on this thread (and iCe's too) and if I come across any info which could be relevant I'll let you guys know.

Best of luck m8!

Well I'll just feel bad when it turns out to be something non vertex related for even pointing the finger that way but I think I'd rather look like an ass than have a bad ssd. I think the clean install will do the trick. Maybe it had to do with my 64k offset. Maybe it had to do with the grimlins (or wife) messing with my pc. I will keep this post updated in case anyone else gets the same problem. The only thing is that it took a couple of weeks for this to happen so I won't feel safe until a good month goes by with no problems. I do have my farcry2 back now so I'll try that tonight.

Okay I feel the need to clear the air, after hours of googling I found a thread that was started today elsewhere and people were encountering the same problem. Oddly, In my first post 2nd sentence, that was the issue. The win live update. Apparently its BS. I un-installed the win live programs and re-installed the old ones from my storage hd (which was un-affected as I declined the update when I tested it) and no more stuttering. That also means not auto save, and no online play until they get a fix. AFAIK, I don't see how anyone is able to still play. The good news is it's not the $210 Vertex (yay!). I got farcry 2 back from my friend and turned res to 1680x1050 and everything to Ultra High and played beautifly.

Potential Vertex buyers do not hesitate! Potential GTA IV buyers, might as well set fire $50.:(

It's good news Ninja! Glad to hear you got it sorted, even if GTA is still off limits. Hope they come up with a fix soon - I should've thought of the updates myself as they are always causing issues at work too. It never ceases to amaze me how MS can be so far off the mark sometimes, but then I suppose they are trying to accomodate almost every prog ever written and every piece of hardware ever made! It's a good point for the future tho and one I shall certainly remember, so many thanks to you!:)
