After being stuck at work for far too long this last 4 weeks, I'm looking at spending my overtime on a z-wave system.

With me working long shifts it'd be nice to have the living room blinds either under automation or my control, so that the house at least appears occupied.

After a bit of research I've found a lot of motor controllers for this, but no firm leads on what motors are suitable.

Has anyone done something similar with a kit or am I going to have to DIY it?

I had a brief look into it. It seems that you first need a standard motorised blind system.

You later add a z-wave module into the wiring to control the motor instead of the switch I guess.

I've seen those but would rather retrofit a motor than buy new blinds! Found this video on youtube which seems the best place to start, can be a Christmas project. Luckily I've got an excellent electrical engineer from work willing to help.
