I know a number of cases allow you to place your Hard Drives either horizontal or vertical, I was just wondering which is the best way round? I would have thought horizontal would be best to keep the disc flat. But you tell me?

Says the double poster . . . :p

I think cooling is more important. Dont want them getting too warm now. mavity doesnt affect them.

There was some form of study that was carried out and I think it was on the BBC website. It was a year or so ago so my memory isnt recalling it word for word, but from what I remember, it concluded that the ambient temperature in which the hard disk is operated in does not effect its lifespan.

FWIW though, I have been watercooling my hard disks for the last 3yrs because some hard disks' PCB get so hot that you cant even place your finger on it; this cannot be good.

Oh and I see that helmutcheese and fobose seem to have some form of history with spamming and double posting. Very amusing. :D

I remember reading the same thing, I think it was a study carried out by Google using their massive RAID arrays of average-sized disks. If you think about it, a hard drive is mostly mechanical with a little heat dependant control circuitry that wont be anywhere as sensitive as a CPU.

As for the original question, as long as the drive is stable and secure, be different and go for vertical!

PK!

It doesn't make a lot of difference but from what I know once the drive is in one orientation it is best to just leave it like that and obviously don't move it while it is on. :)

I would go with wich ever way gives you the best air flow in your case - but if you aint got a fan at the front it dont really matter.

I would have thought that mounting the drive vertically would be better IF there is a space between each drive. The space would allow for better air circulation.

i allways have mine horizontally so the air blows through them like so
