Very alternative LAN problem?

Ok, trying to get my trusty S754 Setup back on my LAN.

Dont know why, but the LAN wont setup its IP... It keep going to somethign entirely out of the way.

If I force it, its no better.

The entire LAN is dynamic anyway and I never had this problem before?

Ok, so, I check a few thigns...

1 - CABLE
its good, this cable works fine on the PC next to it, and another cable does the same thing, so its not the cable.

2 - LAN PORT
Ok, no time to mess so I open u pa new LAN Card and disable the O/B but I get the same thing? - I try another card and that too, so the LAN Ports / Cards are fine... It MUST be software surely?

3 - Drivers
Well, since the O/B Is nVIDIA, and one Card was VIA and another a RealTek, its near to impossible for it to be driver, but somethign deeper perhaps?

Ok, so its a fresh install and so I will just reinstall... No worries.

Its still doing the same thing?

Ok, sod it, anyone have any clues as to what my problem is?
 
How are IPs assigned by the router?

If you give IPs only to Known Mac Addresses you won't get an address. (this is never the default setup)
If you've set the DHCP range too small you may have ran out off addresses. (this is never the default setup)

Turn everything off at the wall socket. Boot up your router/modem and the non working PC only. What happens? Can you access the router from that computer?

It sounds like you may have tweaked the router set-up sometime in the past and effectively locked out adding new devices.

Ok.

As I said its dynamically assigning the numbers

192.168.1.x

Router being 1 and first PC starting at 64

This PC down here is never off and thats 64 as expected.
My No2 gets reset occasionally and thats 65 - again, as expected.
The LAN PCs, all works as expected with numbers going around the 66-80 mark... Again as expected.
Both my laptops and my kids laptops all take their IP as normal and this could be anywhere from 66 onwards ( As expected, depending on how many LAN PCs are on at the time ) and even with all the PCs on ( Never truthfully happens under normal use ) then the LapTops get assigned their numbers just fine.

Not doing anything with the Mac Addresses. Free for all so to speak.

Like I said, all other PCs are perfectly able to get an IP its only that one that wont?

Dont get me wrong... If I force an IP... For example I only have my No1 and No2 PCs on, and so, I have tried 192.168.1.67 it does seem to accept it , it just wont receive any info.

What I am going to do in a few minutes is simply add a wireless adapter to it and see if I cant do somethign there?

I dont know why, but Im kind of hoping that an updated driver might be on the Widnows update and that might get it sorted???

worth trying..

burn linux mint or slax to cd, and see if the network adaptor works when using the live environment (no need to install the os, just boot from cd)

could be a broken adaptor, i've seen a few break in the past, but still 'look' ok in device manager
 
Yup, yup, and no, not tried a live distro...

Hang on...

Then again, the O/B LAN, 2 different LAN Cards and now a wireless adapter all fail to connect.

Id say that its somethign thats gone awol during the install, but this is install No2 and right now I have setup another PC with the installation media and the LAN Card and Im ok to talk to you?

I will try a live Disk however...

LAN Tested =
O/B
QTEC ( Via 1605 )

SiteCom Wireless PCI
Linksys Wireless USB

One more trial... I will use the nvidia firewall stuff ( You never know ) and then I wil try a Live Distro... My distros are all downstairs and this PC is upstairs.
 
Well, that made thigns worse!!!

The Linksys seemed to only connect to a BT HUB ??? Im unable to use Zero conf to get Windows to try to take control, but I did not have any app to do i, I just installed the drivers.... Now, nothing?

Maybe its got tothe stage that I have messed about so much with thewindows LAN info that its just got confused like myself.

Lets see what a live distro shows up then... Ill see what suse says.

Ok, its on now ( Im using it right now - Kubunutu 8.10 x64 was right in front of me so I threw it on )

IIi have just pulled it apaprt and its only got the O/B nVIDIA LAN connected now and as you can see. since Im able to post this, its working.

So why not in Windows then?

try a few tcpip repair tools, if they all fail, format


maybe a registry cleaner messed it up or something
 
Ah stuff it... It must be the LAN port... Or I feel that maybe the drivers perhaps?

Its perfectly fine in Linux.

SusE 10.3 / Ubuntu 8.4 / Fedora 10 / Mandrivaone - All live distros and all are perfectly able to use the LAN port just fine.

Try it in Windows and its a no-go!??

I have done a cure however.

I disabled the port and used a card with the port disabled... It works in XP64

If I enable the port again then it fails completely to access the LAN once again ( Even with the PCI Card??? )

So, I have just reinstalled XP64 and used a Card and kept the O/B disabled!!!

Now, why this could happen is bayond me, but its a solution even if its not the cure, so I feel that its best left as-is

so you did a full format and the issue persisted?

check nvidia's site for the latest driver, install without the nvidia firewall thing, and don't install any 3rd party AV / firewall software before testing..

do it on a fresh 32bit install, then try a a 64bit install

Yes, I tried with XP32, XP64 and 2000 ( Dont mind which I use )
I have now also verified the very same problem happens with all 3?

Works fine on a PCI Card but as soon as I install the nVidia drivers for the OnBoard LAN, the O/B LAN and the PCI Card fail to work, and no matter what I do, I cannot get it back without a fresh install?

So, I have simply avoided the O/B Lan altogether and its fine.

Its fine with all 3 as I said, but XP64 is on there now and I have not used XP32 for 4 years now so I will keep XP64.

Done that.
I have a collection of drivers that date back to the year dot and I just never delete my old ones... I have gone through them all and they all do it... Including the new ones.

And no,I have not had the chance to install any A/V or MalWare app at all.

Done them both... As I said, its cured if I avoid the O/B LAN
 
COuld be a corrupt firmware for the LAN controller, that is only corrupt in the section that Windows accesses (if that is possible). You could try reflashing the BIOS (even with same version) to see if that is corrupt.
 
Yes, I am gathering my BIOSes aright this minute anyway as that has ... If you pardon the pun "Flashed" into my head also.

I am currently using a heavily modified custom BIOS and so, I will be flashing with the latest "Stock" BIOS that I can find, which at this time is 6.23 but I know that I also found a Stock v8 BIOS and I have it somewhere but its not with the others?

Not sure which custom BIOS im on right now but its possibly the TMOD CD one

Hang on I remember sopmethign about 9.14 now?

Oh I dont know ???

Yes, Im going to re-flash it later on with whetever the latest BIOS I can find and give it another shot.
