I have a very annoying engine noise which sounds like a babys rattle. Its coming fromm the main bit in that engine picture in the picture below. The guy i bought the car off says i should let the engine oil settle as he did an oil change and engine flush. Any reason to be worried as that noise annoys me.

Virtually impossible to diagnose over the net.
But its either the tappetts or the Alternator bearings. By your description and the previous owners mention about oil i would be very supspicous.
Is the noise worse when cold and gets better once the engine is warm or is it constant.
Does the noise speed up when you rev the car.
Can you pinpoint where abouts on the engine the noise is coming from.
If not noticeable then get a long screw driver and place the handle next to your ear and touching your head. Then dip down touching the screwdriver on the rocker cover etc and try to locate the noise.
Then post back and i will try to be more specific.

You could tell us what car it is, and how loud the sound is, does it vary with revs, does it get louder at speed?

It could be as simple as somthing loose in the engine bay or as bad as your engine about to explode.

Well, it's a Hyundai and it's got 16 valves and two overhead cams. What more do you need to know :p

I'd just ignore it till it turns into a nice grinding, shearing noise and then use that excuse to buy another car :D

Yes, there is that, but what version of 16 valve twin can engine is it?

There could be a particularly common fault on a 1.8 version of this that is exactly like that described, that doesnt occour in a 1.6 version.

The noise is coming from inside the bit with the "dohc" bit on it and sounds like a tap. it seems to go at high speed or maybe thats because I cant hear it. I phoned the guy i bought the car of this morning and he says It should go away after about 600 miles. I have already done 400 and its still there. I am thinking low oil pressure.

Well did u not ask him why the car will stop making the noise after 600miles? And what it is making the noise now?

Id say proberly tappets, my car is pretty bad for em even tho i have adjusted the clearances on all of em. Theres another part of car i cant remember what it is at this min (will come to me in a min) which can sound like its the tappets but it aint ill let ya know when i remember lol

The injectors?

I think what I will do tomorrow is take the car to three different garages for three opinions. Cheers guys for your help anyway.

Hmmm, 1.4 Rover engines are known for this.

It basically comes with age... and abuse.

My old 214 was lovely and quiet when I bought it. 10,000 miles and 3 oil changes later (even a cared for engine does it) and it was starting to get a bit ticky on idle. Nothing to worry about really, unless it gets worse.

The 220's engine is wicked. Nice and quiet... or at least I thought it was. Now I have a nasty ticking sound. I was heartbroken when I first heard it, until I located the source of the noise... the exhaust manifold gasket.

In a car engine bay, it can be hard to locate the true source of the noise. Best bet is to place a long screwdriver on certain areas of the engine and place your ear against the end of the handle. That'll help you to locate the source of the noise.

Whats the milage, its the tappets most likely which is nothing serious

It has done 58000 miles. Nationwide Autocentre want to charge me £70 to start investigating  I would rather spend that money on a cambelt change.

I think that's when the engine is due to implode. Bit like Dell laptop batteries which have a counter in them so you have to buy a new one after so many charges, even though the battery is still ok.
