Very cheap update required

Hi all,

Another attempt to get my 2015 system updated on a real budget.

At Present I have an Asus X99 mobo with a 5820K, 32GB of 2333 ram with 2 M.2 drives and an EVGA RTX 2080.

I was thinking about a cheap motherboard/CPU/RAM/cooler (at present I have a Corsair H110 AIO) and keeping the rest of the system.

I don't need a mega gaming system, just an update that allows me to continue playing the odd game of COD and one that will allow me to upgrade to win 11, something my present X99 doesn't allow.

Something really cheap but one that will allow me to have a reasonable upgrade to the 5820K is what I am looking for,

Thanks in advance.

What's the budget? If you want to go really cheap it's easy enough to get a Win 11 compliant board, RAM, and CPU for sub £250 including OS.

MSI H610M -£55
Intel i5 12400F - £100
32GB RAM - £60
Win 11 Pro - £10

Obviously, not all of this is available from Overclockers.

Thanks for the reply. That is definitely the level of spend I am looking for.
Are there any ATX boards that have wifi for the 12400F that you might suggest?

if you are solely upgrading because win10 is being discontinued, you can install win11 on unsupported hardware with rufus
personally, i would opt for saving a bit more, than to do a half-assed upgrade
for a "proper" gaming rig, the 12400/ryzen 5600 is pretty much entry level in 2025

The 12400F is decent value for the money, but would recommend the 12600K/KF or 13400F/14400F if you can, since all three of those CPUs have 4 E-Cores which the 12400F lacks.

Alternatively, if you're willing to spend a bit more, 7600X available elsewhere and:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £193.97 (includes delivery: £3.99)

This would give you better upgrade potential.

I understand a budget is a budget, but I do wonder if you're going to regret buying such basic boards, especially coming from X99. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of spending £400 on a board, but even things like USB ports, the audio codec, PCIE lanes and M.2 slots can be a downgrade on X99 when you're looking at spending £100.

Thanks for the help. I know the Asus board I have presently is very good but this is very much an interim upgrade to see me to the next big upgrade/whole new system.

The idea to get a 12600 and B650 seems like a good idea.

you're stuck between a rock and a hard place with your budget
you'd be buying into dead-end platforms with limited upgrade path

your ram, although large enough in capacity, is slow...which means it will hamper the system especially if you go down the ryzen route
ideally if your ram is faster, then AM4 has a better upgrade path if you get the 5600 right now...because you can drop in a 5700X3D later down the line...and if i remember correctly, COD likes the X3D chips, so you'd gain between 5-10% FPS with just a drop-in CPU upgrade in the future

intel CPUs have less of a performance hit with slower ram, compared to the AMD ryzen cpus
but, if you do get the 12400/12600 and a cheap mobo, you have zero upgrade path after that...the higher end intel chips (i7/i9) for the 12/13/14 generation are power hogs and the cheap mobo VRMs will cause them to throttle. not to mention the silicon degradation of the 13/14 gen chips.

if this were my budget, personally, i'd look into getting used parts so you don't eat the massive depreciation costs of a dead-end upgrade

Does your motherboard have a TPM socket? If so, will installing a TPM module allow you to install Windows 11?

If you're willing to risk Ali Express I would suggest a Ryzen 7400 CPU. You'll want an A620 or B650 motherboard, and 32 GB DDR5.

Can get the 7500F for sub-£100 at the moment

Recently built an upgrade in the last couple of weeks:

7500F £98
B650M D3HP AX £80
Crucial Pro 6000MHz £51
Win 11 Pro £4

Total damage £233

:D

This - bypass the artificial requirements and carry on with what you have.

Could even look at dropping in a cheap Xeon to gain a couple of extra cores and move forward 1 generation e.g. 1660v4 is £20 on eBay, to tide you over for a little longer to save for a full upgrade.

I might manage it by following the instructions so here goes...
