Very good RTS Games

Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne Expansion. STILL look pretty and the story line is totally and utterly engrossing. Two of the greatest RTS games of all times.

After this i would heavily recommend the Dawn of War series and definitely the Battle for Middle Earth Series.

x2, it really is epic singleplayer, and online, plus theres DOTA online too!

you think empire earth 2 is good? its an abomination! Did you play the orginal? I wasted so much of my childhood on that game.

Supreme comander, while nothing like it, is an AMAZING game. Any RTS fan will love it.

I'd say Forged Alliance, but the AI is pretty thick as bricks, and even the Sorian AI mod can't really fix things much. Still the core gameplay is fantastic if you can forgive the AI issues - just make sure you have a beefy PC to run skirmish/multiplayer games with lots of units.

The game makes my 3.7ghz dual core weep sometimes.

yeah played them both. like 2 more. the territory system was an interesting addition.

I personally like EE far more than EE2, didn't like that any more :(.

So I'd recommend:

Rise of Nations.
Empire Earth.
Supreme Commander.
Rome: Total War.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys but most of those look like they focus just on war I'm looking for a game with allot of management of resources etc (so gathering wood and iron then changing that into a secondary resource and even a tertiary one) I've played games like empire earth(oh my gid did i spend way to much time on this ^_^), age of empires, world of warcraft, rise of nations and the total war series so far :P. Also played tropico and those sorts of games but I want one that combines tropico with good RTS

Hmmmm, ever tried giving the older settlers game a go ?

Because of your updated requirements, I'd think you'd really enjoy:

settlers 2 10th anniversary.
Anno 1404
Pharaoh
Caesar 3 ( ignore the modern Caesar 4, it's crap in comparison)

All above feature a lot of resource stuff, eg. settlers grain into flour, then flour + water into bread, miners eat bread and produce coal and iron ore, that becomes iron, then it becomes tools or weapons, etc...
Anno highly recommended, a lot of different resources. Don't know how to explain it but I'm sure you'll love it.
Pharaoh & caesar are pretty much the same game, pharaoh has a bit shinier graphics and has some improvements over c3, but both are essentially the same, just one focuses on rome and one on egypt... Also lots and lots of resources and stuff and combat is only minimal ( only defend your city against occasional attack).
While I don't personally love settlers 2 that much, because I played 3 and 4 first, I personally highly recommend both anno and either c3 or pharaoh ( or both, so all 3 games).

And will probably also enjoy:
Settlers 3-4
Knights and Merchants ( old, but I still like it).
Port Royale 2 ( has flaws but kept me amused for many many hours and it's very cheap on steam.)
And while it's very war based, I still think you'd love Sins of a Solar Empire.
Civilization 4: Colonization ( remake of original colonization, it's a much diff experience to civ4, but, turn based...)

You might like:
Galactic Civilizations 2 ( been ages since I played it but it was decent) ( turn based)
Space Empires 4 ( it doesn't have shiny 3d real time battles like the SE5, but they messed the non battle bits of the game up a bit in 5, 4 is the better one to play imo.) ( turn based)
Sim City 4: May run a tad rubbish even on modern pc's, but the modding community is still very active for it and it's by far the best city sim till date.
Stronghold 2: I must say I can't personally recommend it, as I somehow never got into the full version: I loved the demo but when I bought the full I somehow never touched it after 1 play, but I am like this for pretty much all new (for me) games these days, I only come back to old ones... I think you will probably love this too unlike me.

I think Stronghold 2 is a greatly underestimated game. That may be because until one of the later patches it was known as 'Meathold' as hunting was far too lucrative and therefore negated any real need to produce other sorts of food through farming etc.

Once patched it's a much more balanced game. Not only resource management, involving mining stone and iron, but many different types of food production. There's also a myriad of industries, both domestic and military. Also some unusual themes such as waste management/vermin control, and the criminal justice system is great fun. I love the 3D game engine too.

There's two campaigns, The Path of Peace and The Path of War. Also the usual player created downloadable content, and of course online/LAN play.

Be great to see a sequel.

Thanks snowdog :D While I have played a fair few of those games I haven't played civilization colonies yet. I am a civilization freak who normally plays on emperor or higher mode >=3

strongly recomend settlers. The series went down hill though since the orginals. Settlers 4 is one of the best i think.

In these games it will take you a long time just to get 1 unit out because for example you need to:

-Build houses to get settlers
-build wood cutters huts for the settlers to collect wood (requires axe)
-build saw mill to make planks (needs saw) - needed to produce buildings
-build stone cutters (needs pick) - needed to produce buildings
-build mines to get ore (needs pick) - needed to produce tools and weapons
-Build foresters huts to replant the forest so you don't run out of wood.

-Note you need to find the mine spots first. There are mountains that you must explore. With out them you can't make any units.

to feed mines:

-build fishermans hut for gold and sulpher (fishermans rod needed)
-build water hut + sheep/goat ranch and slaughter house (requiring an axe to kill the animal) for iron
-build water hut, grain farm, grain mill, bakery for bread for coal mines - the most important. Here you need a syth for the grain farm.

Using ores:

-iron smelter (requires iron and coal ore)
-gold smelter (requires coal and gold ore)

-Weapon smith (requires iron bars from smelter)
-Tool smith ( requires iron bars from smelter) - this produces more tools which as you can see are fundermental, you will start off with some however. But more is always needed.

Now a barracks to use the weapons and gold bars to upgrade better soldiers.

There are also other things like priests to get they require several other buildings as well. Every building but the barracks requires a settler in it and every soldier requires a settler. So you need a lot of houses as well. There are also other special buildings like the vikings can turn wood logs into coal (not planks).

Very hard game but so rewarding when you learn how to do it. I figure thats what you want at least. Its very old btw. The new ones just arnt the same for me though :)

Yeah I absolutely adore the Stronghold series. Crusader was also extremely good.
